Dog acting Weird- clingy

hi! Curious if anyone is having issues with their animals or dogs during their pregnancy? The last month or so our 12-13 year old German Shepard has been anxious and follows me around constantly. I can't even cook a meal or wash the dishes because he has to be right next to me. We are used to him doing practically nothing as he is old, and now he is all over! Driving me nuts actually. I've done some research on maybe they have a sense for these things, etc. I appreciate anyone's feedback or how to handle, if indeed it has anything to do with pregnancy.

Re: Dog acting Weird- clingy

  • My dog is acting the exact same way. She's gets to the point too if she can't see me she will hyperventilate!

  • My cat has been really lovey these past few weeks too. I assume she's just picking up on changing hormones. I'm enjoying the attention while I can get it. I'm sure she'll be ignoring me again soon enough.

  • I actually went to my husband's coworker's house to meet him and his wife, and their two HUGE dogs stayed by my side. Their owner was showing us their property and he and my hubby were a little ahead of me, but the dogs stayed with me. I felt alittle paranoid
But was like..... Ok so...are they gonna eat me??? I might be able to outrun the three legged one!
Both of the dogs' heads were even with my hips. I was in the middle.

As for my own dogs they are always with me so can't tell by their behavior, although my cat wants to lay right by my belly and she's normally near me , but not that close!

When I got pregnant with my son I was still living with my parents and our dog, a Yorkie, started throwing up every time she saw me ... To this day she pees or throws up when she sees my son :S

This is one clear sign that we know im pregnant! My golden could care less about me EXCEPT when im pregnant. Its annoying to a fault because im constantly tripping over him since he is at my feet 24/7. Soon after baby is born he leaves me alone and he watches ocer the babies.
  • My dog will follow me around especially if I'm home alone. My cat has been a bit more affectionate too. He cries at the door and will come in for a few minutes, get some pets and then decide that's enough and be on his way haha.
  • My cats are on me as soon as I sit or lay down and always laying on my belly they were never like this before they usually slept on their house or sat looking out a window. I think they must sense something.

I think its so cute that they can tell haha . They say you actually let off a different sent while pregnant that the dogs pick up on . My dogs the same way . I actually got him before i knew i was even pregnant at the time and he was only 7 weeks . Hes a blue nose pitbull so hes always by my boyfriend an I side , but he follows me where eveerrr i go . If i get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom he comes right with me an lays down and waits for me to go lay back down . If im sleeping at any time of the day he sleeps right with me and does not get up until i get up. Hes definitely my little body guard .
  • I have a 10 year old Sheppard that is the exact same way. Follows me everywhere and gets very sulky when I leave the house (tail between his legs). He's a pain in the butt, but it's also cute.
  • My dog has always been super attached to me but lately she doesn't leave my side for a moment. She starts crying when I start getting ready and somehow knows I'm not taking her with me. I adore her
  • Our GSD does that anyway. But our 10 year old white schnauzer won't leave my side for the past few days. My husband jokes he's alerting us labor is about to start!!

One of our dogs, Gonzo, is always affectionate and clingy. He's also very intuitive when it comes to sensing change. He's been ultra needy and attentive the last maybe five months. Our other dog, Magnum, hasn't changed his attitude one bit.
  • We have a Jack Russell mix and she has always been "my" dog. She was no different when I was pregnant with DS1, but after I had him and was home, hubby went to pick her up and she wouldnt come near me or look at me for at least 2 days. She hugged the wall across the room from me and walked into our bedroom and stayed there most of the first day. It was the weirdest thing!

Yup my dog has been the same pretty much since the second I was pregnant. We have a 7 yr old pit bull and she's always been pretty clingy and cuddly but the last 7 mo or so she's been super attached to me and also very protective (more so than she used to be) so I definitely think she knows! I think it's cute! She's also been more obedient and less stubborn which is interesting and I hope that continues! Just lately my cat has been more affectionate too. She's usually super independent.
  • We have 2 boxers, and no matter what room I am in or go to, they are both right with me. It's pretty sweet and they are great with kids (i have 4 nephews) so I look forward to them protecting our LO

My dog is 2 and he's acting the same
Sleeps next to my belly and won't let me close the bathroom door. Always "inspecting" (smelling) me and is constantly under foot
  • My gal is attached to me so nothing new there. However she is finally getting that I don't want her big old face in my crotch when I go the bathroom so she guards the door instead.

  • They say pets have a sense of change. They don't know what it is but they no something's gonna go down soon. And dogs typically wanna be protective so her following you around is normal. My german Shepard follows me everywhere! Even the bathroom
    And just watches me. lol
  • So glad you posted this. My dogs have been extra clingy lately and my older dog (who is a mama's body) has been acting anxious lately. Makes me so sad. I just snuggle him as much as he will allow. It's time like this I wish they could talk...

  • I wake like this almost every morning or nap when the fiancee isn't home.
  • One is acting so crazy!!! I swear she had morning sickness worse than I did. She would just throw up randomly everywhere. I was so worried I took her to the vet and they said she was fine. Lately I've been finding her cowering in the bathroom for no reason...it's really weird. I hope once the baby comes she goes back to normal. But I have a feeling the sound of a screaming baby is going to send her into a tail spin!

The other one could care less.
  • I have a 5 1/2 year old blue nose pitbull who is my love. We've always been obsessed with each other, so nothing's changed there. BUT...he's started waking me up in the middle of the night every night and it infuriates me. He literally just wants me to get up with him.
  • I have 2 pit bulls- a blue nose and a brindle. My brindle is watching every little move I make and when DH kisses and talks to my belly, she always comes between us smiling, shaking her tail, and looking up at the belly. It's the cutest thing! My blue nose has been the family/home protector but I think my brindle is going to be LO's protector.

  • Mine is the exact same. She whimpers if she can't touch me. When I sit down she sits along side me and licks my bump then rests her head on it.
She has started growling at anyone or anything that come in range of bump.

She's usually so quiet and lady like but even when I walk her she doesn't really leave my side. She looks for me if I hide and it seems to panic her.
They say that dogs can hear baby's heartbeat. But puppy whimpers when I get Brixton hicks too. It's like she knows I'm in pain...
    She also has separation anxiety.
  • Both my dogs have been extra clingy. My girl however is OBSESSED with me. Always by my belly, and when I would try to leave the house she hides in the bathroom, and won't come out. She definitely knows something is up! The last couple weeks she has been glued to my belly, I am on bedrest and I'm sure she loves all the cuddle time. I'm starting to get really sad thinking about my dogs being second in line, they were there for me during my 3.5 year infertility battle and I just love them so much! I hope once the baby comes I still take the time to make them feel loved.

  • Has anyone experienced some bad behavior from their dogs out of nowhere? Just yesterday she totally rebelled against me and walked upstairs even though I was calling her to come down. :0 this never happens, she's a good dog. It's like she hates me all of the sudden. Then later on she laid on my lap, like I'm sorry. So weird!!

    Yes!
Our dogs have randomly been acting out but anytime they do, they always come back to apoligze and make up for it!
