Car seat

anyone else's baby HATE the car seat?? Like HATE it. I've tried everything and anything. He screamed for twenty straight minutes in the car seat on the way home today. Nothing would cure it. I even thought maybe he had a burp, nope. Just screamed and screamed. Ugh. Makes it miserable to go anywhere.

Re: Car seat

  • Mine does this sometimes, luckily only like 60% of the time... My 3 year old sings a song to him "it's okay Ty, you don't have to hate the car"...

The only thing that seems to sometimes help is to make it really dark and he falls asleep then. (Blanket or canopy over the seat). But that stinks cause then I can't keep an eye on him as easily... I'm hoping it will pass.

I hope your little one outgrows it bc there is nothing more stressful or distracting than listening to your newborn scream while you try to be a safe driver

It could be the car seat. Once my kids reached a certain weight, they hated the infant seat. I pressed around in it and realized the padding was crap. We bought a super comfy car seat and barely hear a peep now.

@KD32412 it could be. It's a top of the line car seat and has brand new padding , .. He's hated it from day one though. It's just recently gotten worse. But ill look into it. Thanks for the thoughts !
  • Mine does the same thing!! Ugh I've been back at work for 7 weeks now and he cries pretty much every day on the way to daycare and on the way home when I pick him up. It's absolutely horrible!!! I don't know if it's just him, or maybe he doesn't like the car seat or something but I feel like I'm going crazy trying to drive and stay calm while he screams every day. Hoping this passes.
  • Mine hates it 50% of the time. If I'm in the backseat with him and distracting him, he's fine. If I'm driving and it's just him and I, he flips out after 20 min.
  • My nephew and niece were like this and it did pass (good news!); they both are fine in the car now at two and a half years and six months. Nothing helped when they were this age, though.
  • My daughter used to hate her car seat and I couldn't figure out why for the longest time! Then I realized that my husband was tightening her should straps too much. :( poor baby. Thankfully that didn't last very long! Have you tried to make sure that there isn't anything that's making him uncomfortable in the car seat? What about hanging a small toy for him to look at from the handle?

Thanks for all the replies. I'll check the comfort level of the car seat, the straps are definitely not too tight and he does have a toy he likes to look at. But maybe something else is bothering him. He tends to hate being "put down" anywhere though. He will tolerate his bouncy seat or his play mat for about the first twenty minutes after waking and eating and then that's it. lol. (I don't leave him there that long that's just the time frame he allows) .. We are working on that too. Momma has to be able to put him down when I've got other kids! Haha. So I think that's part of the problem. He just hates being left in the seat for that long.
  • Mines does exact same thing, starting to think it is the car seat but don't want to invest in a whole new one if its not the problem
  • Mine is the same way. In my case it's the straps. Not that they are too tight, just the sime fact that he is strapped in. I finally figured this out by taking him for a walk in the seat unbuckled. He's fine for walks now unstrapped. He hates the car seat so much that even if he does fall asleep while driving, if you put it in park, stop at a drivethru, red light, anything he snaps awake instantly. Same with the stroller. It makes it very difficult to run errands alone. He also hates the carrier, wrap, bumbo, bouncy seat, being rocked and sitting/sleeping on anyone. If possible he would like to be held standing, facing out haha you are definitely not alone!
  • @Katiegreg2010 mines the same way! Loves to be facing out with me standing... Not the most conducive way to get anything done! ;)

We just purchased the same car seat our 2 1/2 yr old uses, we figure she'll use it till she's in a booster seat anyways, just purchased it sooner. Love the Chicco NextFit convertible car seat. It's for 5 lbs - 65 lbs. Our little girl rarely cries now, and her big sister loves her chair too.
  • Mine crys when I put her in it. But as soon as I put her in the car and start driving she stops. I guess I got lucky on that part. But when Shes in it for longer then an hour that's when the screaming starts.
