Anyone with ureteral stent placement/replacement experience?

I'm hoping someone can relate & answer a few questions for me so I have peace of mind.....I just had to have a stent placed in my right ureter this past Sunday because I had a kidney stone blocking the flow of urine causing excruciating pain & swelling of my kidney. (My stone was 1cm!) this is my 2nd pregnancy & while I've had a long standing history of stones over the past 9 years, I never had any issues while pregnant with my daughter!......the urologist said I will need the stent replaced 3-4 times throughout my pregnancy & he won't remove the stent & stone until after I deliver. I am currently 18wk1day. Has anyone ever gone through this this early in pregnancy & had to deal with having the stent replaced multiple times? What type of symptoms following stent placement did you have & does it get any better/easier each time?! I'm 3rd day post procedure & my belly feels like a huge balloon that's going to pop! I'm still feeling the urgency to pee but that's getting better. But I can feel the stent move/pinch when I pee, does this go away eventually?? Waiting to hear back from the urology office but would love some advice from mommies who have been through this! Thanks in advance!!

  • I haven't had this issue and I'm sorry you're having to deal with it.  Positive thoughts for healing your way.

I had to have two stints with my last pregnancy, but I was 34 weeks. I had four stones so it was bad as well. I can't tell you the change procedure, but I can tell you about removal. I had 2 weeks to have my lithotripsies and both stints removed due to insurance ending. Litho were first, ended up having 3 because one stone was so big. They were at the hospital, outpatient with minimal recovery time and just some soreness for a couple of days. My stints were two different office visits. One was removed one office and it's uncomfortable but nothing compared to the actual pain from a stone (apparently, he has had men cry during removal. Ouch). The second was so calcified that it got stuck about half way out ..fun! So I had to be taken and put under for that removal, too. But my stints had been in 3 months, yours won't be since they are replacing them. Good luck! I'm trying to avoid them this time around.
Oh and peeing feels like a minor uti for a few days, after the removal.

Ps. I prob spelled stuff wrong because my phone hates me
  • I needed to have a stent just after my daughter was born because my ureter kinked. It was supposed to be placed for 6 weeks, but I ended up having it removed after 5 because it was causing serious irritation in my bladder.

I know this isn't really what you want to hear, but a lot of those side effects never really went away for me. I had the feeling I needed to pee constantly and I had blood in my urine off and on for the whole time. It was also pretty constantly exhausted(which was worse at the beginning because I was dealing with a 2 week old and 2 year old.

My biggest recommendation is to make sure you don't over do it! I couldn't walk very far without being in pain. It took much longer to recover when I over did it than if I had just taken it easy from the start. Also , my urologist recommended not to lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk because it can cause urine reflux back into the kidney.

I don't know about replacement because they had to put me under to place mine, but removal was super easy and done in the doctors office. It was uncomforable, but it only took about 20 seconds and it was only that long because mine got stuck. I was feeling 100% back to normal that evening.

I wish you lots of luck over the next few weeks and I will be sending you lots of good thoughts!

Thank you for sharing your experiences!.....my symptoms seem pretty mild now (day 4 post op) I have some pinching in my back at times & the urgency to pee is still there (nurse at urology office said that will probably stay the entire time the stent is in place).....I am a nurse as well & have taken care of patients in the past who have had stents placed, but this gives me a whole new appreciation for what they have gone through!....my doctor didn't place any restrictions on activity but his nurse did tell me to take it easy & not overdue it. Luckily I only work per diem because I stay at home with my 1 1/2 year old daughter. Lifting her has been the only thing I'm a little concerned about. Also, about the weight gain with baby & how it's going to affect the stent from all the pressure! I think it's going to be a long 5+ months until this is all over but am trying to remain positive. Thank you for all your kind words!
