how do you get your LO to take meds? My 2 month old just had shots today and when I give her Tylenol she spits some of it out or just holds it in her mouth. Any tips or suggestions?

Re: Medicine

  • Hope you got an ok from her pediatrician first. They give dosage based on weight at this age. I normally squeeze their cheeks together to get their mouth to open, and use the dropper and give in smaller squirts. If you do the full dose at once, it will leak out or they might choke on it. Good luck!

  • @KD32412 the doctor told me to give it to her. I give it in small squirts but she hold it in her mouth until I'm done then spits it out a little at a time
  • Try to aim it as far to the side and back as possible. No guarantee that it will work, but if it's in the side, it is less likely to leak out. If all else fails, I think they make pacifiers that serve as medicine droppers.
  • Agree with PP, mine gets Zantac twice daily- it took awhile to feel confident that he was getting the full dose. We use syringe, squirt a little bit at a time towards inside cheek/towards the back, wait for him to swallow, then give him more - good luck!
  • Agree with PP, think of aiming towards their back molars. I also tilt baby at an angle, use gravity to your advantage. It's really a skill that you'll soon master. Try giving some to a squirmy 2 year old! Ugh!

Just started Zantac today and he isn't a fan of the syringe so we use a mini bottle looking thing with a nipple that's made for giving meds. He sucks it right out. I believe it's made by Munchkin.
  • When I do it I go to the far back of his side of his check give little to him if he does not swallow it I blow in his month like just a puff and he will swallow it then give more and blow again try it it works
  • If your baby uses a pacifier, leave the pacifier in his or her mouth and squirt medicine in the side of the mouth while the pacifier is in. A trick from the nurse at the pediatrician's office.
  • You can also blow a burst of air in their face to make them swallow reflexively. My lo is on lasix and that is what the hospital told us
