Any mamas with bad knees?

I searched and didn't find any threads about this yet... for those moms who are not first timers and have bad knees, what can I and the other first time moms expect as we gain weight and our bellies get big? Might sound strange but it occured to me last night as I was having trouble sleeping due to knee pain (although last night I'm sure it was due to the inclement weather rolling in). Both knees have been scoped twice and I've got some pretty bad arthritis in one of them. What were your experiences with past pregnancies? What have you found to help? Tips, tricks?

Re: Any mamas with bad knees?

  • I have some damage in both knees due to competitively jumping horses or many years. I had more discomfort as I gained weight but I used a brace on the right knee (worse side) and found elevating my feet whenever possible and icing helped. You can take tylenol but I found it really didn't touch the chronic ache and crunchy feeling. I would do some strength training exercises now if you aren't already to strengthen the muscles around the knee. FX things progress pain free for you.

  • RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation. Do you work with an orthopedic doctor? Maybe they could provide you some other advice/techniques.
  • I have a bad left knee with cartilage deteriation from a sports injury 10+ years ago. It didn't bother me too much last pregnancy because I carried mostly in the summer. Towards the end when I got colder it was mostly like a normal winter, heat pads and elevation for me. Good luck. I know there are natural gels and pills you can take that can help you can find them in the health stores. Hope this helps!

I didn't have more than normal knee pain with any of my pregnancies, thankfully. I have multiple knee problems, moreso on the left knee.
But with being heavier than previous pregnancies and having to carry around my toddler I may have issues this time.
I use ice on my knees when the swelling is bad and lots of rest.
  • Thanks ladies! I hope you all have no knee pain with your pregnancies as well! When I lived back home I had an orthopedic surgeon that I saw, but now that my husband and I are married I don't (had to move since he's in the army). Now that you mention it, it would probably be worthwhile to get a referral from my primary care manager so I can see one.

I'm no stranger to taping/wrapping my knees or wearing a brace, using ice, elevating them. I've been through therapy I don't even know how many times so I'm quite familiar with the exercises I need to do lol
  • So FTM here, but I have rotten no good knees due femoral patella and a prior dislocation. I was just talking to DH about this today as running in the heat can cause flare ups and usually I pop ibuprofen to help (no longer an option blahhhh). What I do use and seems to be helping is Kinseology Tape, (or KT tape), I buy it at CVS and as an added bonus they come in cool patterns and colors. You can youtube videos on how to apply, and it's super easy. As an added bonus when wet, it has a cooling effect which is awesome for swelling, and it stays on for days.

Some people love it, others don't, but I'm a big big fan, maybe it would work for you?
  • I actually already use kinesiology tape when I need it :-) one of my physical therapists taught me how to properly tape my knee up. Thanks so much for the suggestion though! I never thought to check CVS though! I order mine on Amazon, but I'll have to make a stop at CVS now!
  • I had ACL reconstruction surgery on my left knee 6 years ago, but there's still a tonne of cartilage damage that wasn't repaired. When had kiddo1.0 (who's nearly 8) I had partial tears to ACL and MCL in that knee. The thing I struggled with most wasn't the weight gain, but the effect of the relaxin hormone ater in pregnancy that makes ligaments and tendons less elastic and looser in readiness for delivery. I found I was having to be incredibly conscious of how I was walking, and turning in particular. Im already finding that I'll occasionally put my foot down "wrong", and I'm finding more stiffness and soreness if I'm sitting in one position for too long. I think the best advice is just to pay attention to your body even more than usual.
  • On my 9th birthday I caught my left knee between 2 metal bars at the park and we were seconds away from calling the fire station to cut my knee out, thankfully someone who used to work in the ER was there and got my knee out. I had major swelling and a massive bruise that covered the entire center of my leg but I was never taken to get it looked at. Every once in awhile I will get pains that I have only gotten since that incident, I will sit on a warm tub, put a heating pad on it then switch to ice, And sometimes, tho it hurts, I will bend it back and forth to keep it from locking up on me, walk around, move it, then heat and ice it again. Also keep it elevated.
  • Ohh gosh, I had no idea that hhormones could affect that! Thanks for the heads up! I already have issues with twisting it slightly wrong or stepping wrong and being in serious pain so I'm definitely glad to know that I should be extra cautious. Sometimes I need to pop my knee to relieve pressure. That's probably not what a doctor would recommend, but when it gets so still I can barely bend it, what else am I going to do?

Looks like we should invest in a heat pads and get an ice pack or two! With all of my surgeries I was living at home yet, so my parents always had ice packs in the freezer.
  • Yep I am tall and injured my knee playing roller derby. I also have issues when all the tendons and ligaments relax but elevation and being mindful of where I placed my feet when walking helped
  • Good to know the fun is just beginning.... :((
