Blood thinners & c-section

I requested a c-section. They said November 20th is when they will do it. Recently when I mentioned it, I was informed that if I go into labor early that I will have to have a vaginal birth which I really don't want. The reason is, is because with the scheduled c-section, they will take me off the blood thinners 2 days early, where as, if I go into labor before they won't be able to stop the thinners in time. Anyone ever been in the situation where they did the c-section while still on the thinners ? Advice please

Re: Blood thinners & c-section

  • Are you on heparin or Lovenox injections? From my research anyone on those will be taken off around 37w. Is there a reason you need to be on up until the 11th hour? Is the reason you are getting a c-section due to the blood thinners or something else?

  • I want a c- section because 1. I already have a scar and brain hemorrhages run in the family & I don't want to take the chance. I'm on lovenox due to a blood clot from a surgery. Since hormones cause it they want me to be on it. I haven't asked if I have to be on it till the 11 hour. My obgyn said that it would be risky if they did it before the scheduled c-section, but I'm curious what they do for the people that need an emergency c-section due to complications
  • Lovenox is short acting and they can reverse it with vitamin K and FFP in a matter of hours if they have to
  • If you are on Lovenox, they will switch you to Heparin which has a shorter half life than Lovenox.  (you take one shot every 12 hours)  I believe they switched me at 36 weeks last time.  If you go into labor early in the morning, you will skip your morning shot.    If you go into labor in the middle of the day, you don't take your next shot, etc.
They can test your blood to see if they need to give you a vitamin k shot or not.

    Best of luck!

I only take 1 shot a day at night. I will have to ask my specialist about that since my ob doesn't deal with this subject of blood thinners

I take one shot a day now and once they switch me to heparin I will have to be on two a day. Definitely talk with your specialist. You will feel much better knowing "the plan".
