Must have baby items

Hello, this is my first post. I joined awhile back but haven't really had anything to post about until now. I am wondering what items were the most helpful to moms in the first year. I already have a crib and a jogging stroller combo, a boba wrap, and a rock n play sleeper. Are there any other helpful items? Has anyone had experience with having baby sleep in the rock n play? My bed is already pretty small for the 2 of us and I don't know how I feel about starting the baby off in the crib by itself.

Re: Must have baby items

  • Baby monitor
  • Loading the player...
  • A bouncer seat was my only must have item for the first few months. Any kind works, but I liked being able to put him in the bouncer in the bathroom while I showered or on the kitchen island while I cooked. We used a pack n play with the bassinet for the first seven months and switched to a crib after that. Honestly most baby items are really luxury items. My son's favorite thing was his jumper starting at about 8 months.
  • Swaddlers with the velcro. At 2am half awake, the last thing you want to do is mess around with swaddling your baby. I'm all about the cheating velcro!
  • You'll find mixed opinions on babies sleeping in the rock and play.

Personally my daughter slept in it beside my bed until she was 3 months old. (Then she moved into her crib.) She didn't like sleeping laying flat and I liked having her so close.

If you plan to breast feed is suggest the my breast friend pillow. I found it really helpful. A white noise machine or an app for your phone or a track to play on an iPod dock helps tremendously.

If you plan to use bottles I'd suggest one of those microwave sterilizers. Not a must but I liked having it.

There is a lot of stuff you really don't need.

    Welcome and congratulations!!
  • Oh I didn't realize that older posts could be moved back to the top like that! Thank you! I'll definitely be reading that one.

  • We have a CD player vs a white noise machine. We've played classical music for DD since 8 weeks.

We had her in a moses basket in her crib for the first 4 months.

Swaddlers with Velcro. I definitely second that. Those were a life saver!!

I agree with the PP that most baby items ate luxury items, but they can make your life so much easier.
Items I forgot to get with DS that I really needed were burp cloths and nursing bras. Looking back I cannot believe I forgot those. Also make sure to get infant tylonal, no one wants to run to the store when you do need it the first time.

  • Velcro swaddle blankets, diaper genie , swing and pack n play ( as opposed to rock n play) were must haves for us
  • Things essential to help baby sleep (so you can, too): * easy to use Velcro swaddlers * white noise machine * (almost optional) baby swing -- some babies don't need it, but our first born often refused to sleep outside of it when fussy. It was such a lifesaver, we bought two (for upstairs and downstairs) Essentials for mom if breastfeeding * nursing bras, and easy to nurse in PJs and lounge clothes * nursing pads (oh the leakage) * lanolin (for nipple soreness relief) * large water bottle with straw near nursing area * healthy , one handed, snacks near nursing area Baby carrier (We loved our Moby wrap and Ergo, it soothed baby and let our hands free for cooking and eating) Burp cloths/receiving blankets (for inevitable spit ups) Easy access TV /Netflix entertainment (Because when you're up all night walking a fussy baby and nursing, your brain needs something easy to handle) Teething necklaces (My daughter refused normal teethers, but loved all the teething jewelry. I even had some masculine ones for DH. We'd be able to walk around in the carrier while she happily chewed. I've yet to meet a teething baby who didn't love playing and using my teething necklaces) Nose-frida (Eventually, baby will get a super congesting cold and this will be your life saver) Robeez socks (These are kickproof! Totally worth it. Ignore all other brands) Optional, but very helpful.... *A mobile over the changing table/area. This entertained my baby a lot and kept her from squirming as much. *baby monitor (peace of mind, especially the motion detecting SIDS kind) *nursing cover

So the halo sleep sacks with the swaddle Velcro! There is another version of Velcro swaddlers that had the Velcro up on the chest and when my son wiggled it would cut up his chin :(
I second the swing. Our swing was a lifesaver! My indulgence this time is going to be a mini fridge in my room so that if I have to pump at night I can just pop the milk right into the fridge. Also I can keep bottled water and some easy to eat snacks that will make late night feeding a lot easier. My husband wants one for his "man cave"/basement haven so we'll get one and transition it downstairs after the first few months with the new baby.
