Marginal Placenta Previa

I had an anatomy scan yesterday and was told the baby was a week behind. The tech went to see the doctor and she put me back on the bed to check something out. Afterwards she told me my placenta is low-lying (approx. 1.5cm from cervix). Could this possibly cause my baby to not develop properly?

Re: Marginal Placenta Previa

  • I don't think so... The week behind could just be a variation in growth or you didn't conceive exactly when you thought. I had placenta previa with DS and it didn't affect his growth. I hope everything's ok! If you're worried call the office and ask.

  • Nope. It's in the normal range. Typically the placenta Moves up as the uterus expands. And having your date changed by a week or so is also normal. Although im pretty sure anything before 11 weeks and after 20 weeks isn't as accurate. My baby measured a week ahead instead of behind.

It's also an anterior placenta and I had a 16 week scan and was measuring on par with my dates so I worried about the slow down in growth
  • I had my anatomy scan yesterday as well at 18w2d. She said my placenta was on the lower side, but she said it is not placenta previa. She said it was nothing to be concerned about, although she recommended no sex. Also, she said it would have no effect on the baby, but if it continued to go lower and developed to placenta previa, I would have to have a C-Section.

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm hoping that he placenta moves as I get bigger!! Good luck!
  • I had my US last Friday at 20wks 3days and the doctor told me I have a low lying placenta. She said it may very well move up naturally on its own as the baby continues to grow. I have to have another US at 28wks for them to check where it is at again. The doctor gave me a 10lb lifting restriction as well as no sex. If it doesn't shift up on its own I'll have to have a C-section. I am not super concerned with it because everything with the baby was healthy and normal and if a planned C-section is the biggest speed bump I have to manage in this pregnancy then that will be just fine. It took us a little while to conceive so I'm trying to look at the glass half full through this pregnancy.

I had a previous c-section with my son and they say a low lying placenta is more common in pregnancies post section. I seen my doctor today and she wasn't concerned about the slow down on growth and stated that ultrasounds can be off by a week.
  • My placenta is 1cm from my cervix. My Dr said as long as its 2 cm away at the time of delivery everything should be fine. I also was put on restrictions, no sex, no heavy lifting and no getting hit in the stomach. I am a nurse so all of these restrictions are challenging but thankfully I work with some amazing people who have been super helpful so far. My Dr also said she is 99% sure everything will resolve itself. No bleeding so far. Praying that everything continues to go well. My baby is measuring a week ahead of schedule. :)
