Help--Round Ligament Pain!!!

I'm 16 weeks and believe I have just started experiencing round ligament pain. It started the other night and hasn't really stopped. I randomly feel a stabbing pain in my right ovary, all along my side to my lower back. Nothing helps unless I lie down, but even then sometimes it doesn't really do much. Today the pain in my back was a little higher, and it reminds me of kidney stone pain if you've ever experienced that before. I also felt the pain in my uterus this morning, but that was more of a dull pain.
I haven't been bleeding or anything else, but can someone give me some advice on whether it sounds like it's just ligament pain? I tried calling my midwives but the business is closed today.

  • I have already been having round ligament pain too (for a few weeks actually).  Sometimes the pain can be pretty intense and it does occasionally radiate upwards.  It was probably good that you call your midwife to check though - it may be a UTI considering that you are feeling kidney pain.  Hang in there!

  • I've had kidney stones before and round ligament pain and personally would never confuse the two. For me round ligament pain was never in my back - just front side sometimes radiating upwards some. Dull uterus pains happen sometimes too.

Could you be dehydrated at all? For me I tend to get kidney pain if I get dehydrated at all. I pretty much always have some very small kidney stones any time I get checked (I'm just lucky like that), but making sure to drink plenty of water seems to help.

Otherwise, I would also consider possibly a UTI and kidney infection. Do you have any besides your midwife you can call or an after hours number?
  • I went to my last doctors appointment and the nurse said this was a new thing they just learned how to do. Supposed to really help. She didnt tell me how to actually tape it, but i was going to try to google more information on it and figure it out. https://drcrystaldraper.com/kinesiology-tape-and-pregnancy-baby-mamas-need-a-little-support-to
  • RLP for me is sporadic, random and usually a result of moving too fast in a certain way. I haven't noticed much lately, but then sometimes it feels easily triggered. I drive a pick up truck, so sometimes just lowering one foot down to the ground wrong will set me off. One of the more memorable times was when I tried to get up from sitting on the floor.

I will get random aches and twitches that I just assume are growing pains. I think some of those twitches were actually movement I was writing off as growth. But I've never had anything constant or that radiates up into my back. Although at a day shy of 23 weeks, my back is sore in general.

I would definitely call the after-hours line, this seems like something I would want to swing past a medical professional. There has to be an after-hours or on call number number. I can't fathom a business that delivers babies only being reachable during standard business hours.

  • I agree with PPs on this one. I think maybe you should be checked for a UTI just to be safe . I've had RLP as well but never felt it in my back. Mine would be the sides and at times would radiate upward toward my belly button. It would especially hurt if I sneezed without bracing my self, or rolling over really quickly.
  • I went to get it checked out last night, and there was no UTI and no kidney stones. Wondering if it could possibly be a cyst that burst? Or if it could be related to my fibroid. I had to go to an Urgent Care at the hospital, so I didn't get an ultrasound. If the pain is bad I will have to go to by OB and see what's up.

  • How did they tell there was no kidney stones without an ultrasound out of curiosity? That doesn't make much sense... Either way, I'm glad its not an infection. Definitely follow up with OB if it keeps up.
  • Well in my experience and my husband's, there is always traces of blood in the urine when a kidney stone is present.

Yea, that's not true despite your experience. I've have probably a dozen kidney stones larger than 5mm and several smaller than that, and I never once had traces of blood unless actually passing them. Most of them had to be broken up and then came out as sand. Unless you have an ultrasound, you have no idea whether or not you have kidney stones.
  • I have had pain for going on 48 hours now. When I say pain, I mean horrible pain that has been 100% constant, bringing me to tears. It's directly above my pubic bone. Spent the afternoon in the ER yesterday, and our little is fine, but I am not. No relief in site, was told to stay off my feet for a few days, but that's not helping either. Anyone else experience this much constant pain? 18 weeks, 5 days.
  • i experienced this exact thing earlier except on my lower left, and went around to that side of my lower back :( it was constant for about 45 min or so. i took a tylenol nd laid down a little/drank more water and its alot better now

I have also been having the same pain in the lower right area... At 20 weeks and two days (with twins!) I went to the hospital. No UTI infection. Been feeling this pain after I urinate for a few seconds the past couple of days, then this morning went to the restroom, pain increased and it lasted all day! Babies are fine so hospital let me leave.. Could this problem be the above discussion or/also growing pains?
    Thanks!
  • For me rlp has been nothing like u described. 26wks n had it now and again for a while but feels more like I worked out yesterday n JM sore, when I didn't. Or a sharp pain that lasts a few seconds when I quick move or bend wrong, like loading the dishwasher or sneezing lying in bed. I'd call a doc if I were u.
