Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)

Hi Moms & Moms-to-be,

I am 18 weeks. About 3 days ago, I suffered acute pelvic joint pain, affecting my lower right hip/back. The pain was so severe that whilst I was getting out of the car for my OB appointment I was locked paralysed in agony. I had to be put in a wheelchair for the OB consult. Thankfully, my OB confirmed that the baby is unaffected and is doing well.

I was then sent for an emergency session with the hospital's resident physiotherapist who then diagnosed my condition to be acute Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP). The occurrence of PGP is often associated to a change in the activity of the muscles in the pelvis, hip, abdomen, back and pelvic floor; first pregnancy and a higher age at first pregnancy (I am 34 y/o).

The pain scale was at a 9 before my physio treatment but by the end of the session the pain was down to a 7. The physio had provided me with crutches to aid with my walking, and prescribed bed rest for the rest of the week. This is very debilitating for me as I am a very social and extroverted person by nature.

I live in a double storey townhouse and because of the steep flight of stairs, I am confined to the second storey of my home. My husband and parents are helping me with my meals, bringing it up to me in bed. This leaves me quite helpless and frustrated, coupled with the inability to move at my normal pace.

Looking at my friends who are and were pregnant, they didn't seem to be affected with back pains to this extend. I feel at a loss as there is an uncertainty to the duration of my recovery.

Has anyone suffered the same predicament during their pregnancy? Is there any supplementary treatment besides physiotherapy?

If so, I would really appreciate it if you could share your journey with me. I am still in bed still feeling quite sore, more so if I turn in bed - an action I never thought much of until now.

Thanks in advance!
