Reactions to Tdap (whooping cough) Vaccine

So, I got my vaccine on Thursday morning, and went through the rest of my day with a sore arm.  Friday, I wake up, and I am drained beyond belief.  My nausea is ridiculous, I have no appetite, I can barely stand up or stay awake and I develop a sore throat out of nowhere.  As the day progresses, I'm sneezing like crazy and of course in tears.  It dawns on me an hour ago that I was fine before I had the vaccine.  I had a similar reaction to the flu shot the last time I got it, so I stopped getting it.  Anyone else have a horrible reaction to the Tdap shot?

Re: Reactions to Tdap (whooping cough) Vaccine

  • You actually think that is a "horrible" reaction?

Sounds like a pretty normal reaction to Tdap. Most people get soreness or swelling at the injection site and flu-like symptoms for a couple of days. I felt like butt for a day or two and my arm was a little swollen for about a week...all completely normal. Your practicioner should have discussed those side effects with you, or it should have been in your vaccine information that they gave you. I wouldn't classify that as a 'horrible' reaction.
  • Certainly no reason to forego the flu vaccine, either.

  • Yes, I had that too.
  • Yeah those are all normal reactions to TDaP.
And flu vaccine. But they are beneficial to you and baby.

Now I'm actually allergic to the whooping cough vaccine(pertussis vaccine) and have been since a baby. I get hives, fever, severe pain etc..... it is NOT fun.
And last year a PA injected me with the TDaP instead of straight tetanus shot when I was bit by a dog. 24hrs later I was on steroids bc of the allergic reaction etc.... although blessing in disguise bc I don't need a booster now while pregnant and have to go through the same horribleness.

Agreed, sounds pretty typical of any vaccine. Plus, it could be sort of a placebo affect, as those all sound like pregnancy symptoms as well!
  • I am having a similar reaction. Arm's killing me, drowsy, couldn't sleep last night, fever, chills. I feel like absolute crap, but I really hoping it goes away soon. I feel like I took it out on my first grade class today
  • @cmbaldwin08 .. It will go away in a few days! I felt that way for about 3 days after mine! It is well worth it!
  • I can't even get the Tdap vaccine, I wish I could because having the whopping cough twice since i am an adult. Once was before I had kids and the second was just after my daughter got her vaccine.

That's a minor reaction. I had a major reaction when I was little. I stopped breathing, my mom had to do a cpr on me. I would say that's a horrible reaction.

  • Ive had a series head cold that i got about 2-3 days after i got the vaccine

None of this is classified as a reaction.

It sounds like you have a cold, dear.

  • My OB gave me a print out with lots of info on the vaccine including some minor reactions, nausea, swelling/pain around injection site, drowsiness and even swollen glands but it shouldn't last too long. I was extra tired, my arm was sore and my stomach bothered me more then usual but two days later I was back to normal
