2nd Trimester

back pain with a twist

i had a spinal fusion in 2001, during my 1st pregnancy it was almost a non issue. up until about 7 months then the extra weight and loosened joints started to act up. i am 13 weeks along with #2, the big difference this time is that i developed spinal compression about 3 years ago, there is no proof, but i am certain it is due to a failed spinal my anesthesiologist tried to insert for the c section i had with #1, it is in the same exact spot, so my back pain right now isn't really pregnancy related, but it is only going to get worse. i have a high energy 3 year old, i can't be bed ridden for the rest of the year with this pain. i have tried to keep up with stretches, i try to walk a lot, basically walking, sitting, standing and even laying down hurts me all the time. i don't sleep well and i toss and turn all night long. one of my doctors basically said no ortho would even look at me since i am pregnant now. i WILL be talking to my OB the next time i see her about if she can refer me, or i will just look in my doctor inventory personally and see if i can get seen.

my question is mainly, are there others out there who have been through something similar, and do you have any tips or ideals until i can see my doctor. i had been warned against traction due to the spinal fusion. i was considering chiropractic, or acupuncture, maybe a massage, but we seriously can't afford 60$ a visit or more.

Re: back pain with a twist

  • Depending on the chiropractor, if you become a "cash patient" you might be able to get treatment cheaper. I pay $45 per visit. I tore a disc and injured my hip a few years ago, I am 22 weeks and had my first visit this week for terrible back pain.

it is def something i will look into. i have to be careful because the fusion runs most of my spine, i had scoliosis really bad and had it corrected. thank you for the info.

  • I had a spinal infusion done back in 2008 and have been worried about labor and delivery. This is my first pregnancy and I have had some back pain. Were you able to have an epidural? I'm worried it might not work for me because I have the titanium rods in my back.
  • I have no experience with epidurals and spinal fusions but I did have pretty bad back pain and I was not able to pay for massage or doctors visits either.  I invested in cold and blood flow stimulator wraps.  The cold wrap is what it is in helping with inflammation but the blood flow stimulator is what you need to look into. It is a wrap that promotes blood to the affected area without causing strain on the surrounding muscles and tissues.  Similar in the sense of ultra sound therapy. Worth a look into.  It is an easy at home treatment that is an investment of about $150 but in the long run cheaper than repeated visits to doctors. https://www.kingbrand.com/Back_Injury_Pain.php?REF=34PV29.280
