Curious

I am in love with the name Sutton for our baby boy. Everytime I tell some there response is that's a girl name! Could it go either way?

Re: Curious

  • I feel like Sutton could go either way.  It has been typically used for girls, but it feels unisex to me.

  • FYI there is also a board on The Bump devoted to names.  They're great about providing opinions on potential names.  Just go into it knowing that the ladies there are not shy about explaining why they don't like your name.

  • It's been so hard to find a boy name that begins with a S and when I finally do....
  • I've never heard of this name before for a boy or a girl. Is it common in some areas of the country (I'm in the NE)? Sorry I don't want this to come across as rude but when I read Sutton my first thought was mutton. Just something to consider unless I'm pronouncing it wrong.

It may be a southern thing.  We love using family names for first names around here.  lol.

I like Sutton! Speaking of Southerners using surnames as first names (... and male names beginning with S) a gal I know named her son Smith and I looove that (you may have also heard that one from Sex & the city).

Edit: a persons last name has a lot to do with if a first name works well together. That's always something I think about when picking potential names.
  • I've actually heard Sutter as a girl, Sutton as a boy. I think it's one of those that it depends who else you've heard of with the name.

I also agree that it could go either way, but with that said I have not heard of Sutton as a first name, so I wouldn't let that discourage you.
If you LOVE the name that is all that matters (well and also SO, if he/she is in the picture.)

Here are some other S names to consider...
Samuel, Silas, Simon, Sawyer, Shane, Spencer.

Oooh.  I'd be worried about naming my child Sutter.  If he/she ever had a speech impediment it would make life hell.

It's pronounced like "sue"ter. But yeah, I get that for sure.

  • Sutton Foster is a famous (female) Broadway star, so I'm familiar with the name for girls. I think it's cute.
  • It was my pick as a girl name (but we're having a boy!) but I have a friend who is due in November as well with a boy and that is the name they are using for him.
  • To be honest, I haven't heard the name a lot and when you said it, I assumed it was a boy name...so I would say it is unisex (fwiw) :)

I've never heard the name either, upon reading I instantly went to boy as well. So I agree on the ability to be unisex.

Me as well.  I think it has to do with the "on" at the end. It just seems more masculine to me that way.

I agree I feel like it has a more masculine sound.
I like that it is uncommon without being off the wall strange. I actually really like it.

  • I think of it more as a boy. How about Sullivan? Or Sawyer, Smith...
