We had a Vick's too for DS, also didn't love it. We now have one that looks like a frog that he picked out at Target....so far it has been great! Go figure, the cheap one has been better!
Why didn't you guys like the Vicks one? I thought it was great. My daughter had an awful cough and using it with the smelly Vicks insert for a couple of nights cleared it right up.

The Vick's one was loud and seemed to get louder all of the time. It was also a pain in the rear to clean (not that any of them are really fun to clean).
My LOs got runny noses and junked up when teething and the humidifiers help keep the air moist when they slept and were breathing through their mouths all night. They had RSV when they were 6 months old and I also used it then to keep all their passages moist.
Do you ladies think a humidifier is necessary? I never even thought of getting one.. what are the benefits?
We couldn't live without ours. My oldest has asthma and both my boys have allergies. It helps keep the air moist so they can sleep better - especially in the winter months.
We used the humidifier for at least 9 months and found it quite helpful. But, we also had the Vicks, and eventually I just couldn't clean all the lime deposits away!
We have had 2 crane ones. Both were a pain to clean (opening too small to fit your hand inside) and died within a year. We have a vicks one right now that the opening is a lot larger (big enough for a hand to fit in), so it is easier to clean. So far, so good. We've only had it about 9 months though. Made it through the winter fine.
I use the Crane one that's an Owl (got it off Amazon) and it works great. Definitely necessary for my lil' one and her asthma.
Our house got REALLY dry this winter from the cold and running the heater, so for our room I invested in the crazy Vornado one. It was totally worth it with the pregnancy rhinitis since I'm normally NOT a mouth-breather but had to in order to rest!

I found it to make my room very muggy and I would wake up congested - but I could have been misusing it as a FTM.
