Dealing with colic?

Anyone else feeling stressed out by a baby who cries for more than three hours a day? My LO is a month old now and has several periods every day where she cries almost nonstop for an hour or two hours. I'm wondering if this might be considered colic. She spits up a lot (even w our diligent burping attempts) and will not sleep in the crib, we have to use the RnP.

My back is killing me from the baby carrier (the only thing that calms her down) and walking around bouncing her all night, and I'm feeling pretty blue about her obvious distress and my inability to calm her. Of course lack of sleep is also making me feel like I'm losing my mind - any ideas for what might help?

We breastfeed, and I also pump and bottle feed, and when it isn't enough supplement with formula. I'm just using the formula samples we got in the mail, Enfamil, but maybe there is a better brand?

Re: Dealing with colic?

  • Why are you supplementing with pumped milk and formula? Did the pediatrician recommend that? Are there issues with weight gain? If not, it's quite possible that you're over feeding and that's the reason for the spit up and general discomfort.

  • I am currently dealing with colic. My LO is 5 weeks and is very gassy and spits up a lot. She is currently only formula fed, as I stopped breast feeding a little over a week ago. We went to the pediatrician today and she recommended gas drops, gripe water, and switching to a gentle formula. We are trying the target brand gentle and praying it works. The pediatrician also said that weeks 5-7 tend to be the hardest on babies too because of all the changes they're going through and they are generally more fussy then.

Our pediatrician actually said it might be over feeding too - but for the last two days we'be been trying to limit her to no more than 2oz every two hours, and that hasn't helped either. I nurse maybe once a day just so we don't forget how, but I pump the rest of the time to save my nipples. Sometimes my supply isn't quite enough and then we use formula.

The attempts to limit her feeding have only made the screaming worse, so I'm not sure what to do!

Ahh I sure hope it gets better by week 7. I've read that colic can last until around 4 months, and the prospect of three more months of his is so depressing...!
  • Don't feel bad, I'm on the same boat. Today my 3 wk old has been super fussy and not napping. For more than an hour. I give her gripe water that helps her for a little bit but it makes me sad that she is so cranky. Hope your little one out grows it soon
  • It could be acid reflux ,try to read about GER or GERD . My 15 month old suffers with silent acid reflux is a bad sleeper till today . She use to be on Zantac but never really helped, she has flare ups when teething or sick. Babies with reflux sleep better when held up because the acid stays down better, and they do a lot of arching if yours does it. Tend to get worst after or during feeding.
  • Does your LO have a diaper rash? With my first, she had horrible allergies. She is allergic to the milk and soy proteins. She would scream all day and night. She had a bloody diaper rash and was projectile vomiting after every feeding. At first the dr had said it was colic, but ended up being allergies

She does have a diaper rash! We got a cream for it from our pediatrician so it's almost gone, but I wonder if it is allergies... Maybe we'll try a new formula that doesn't have milk or soy, and I can cut dairy out of my diet.

I got some gripe water on Amazon today, maybe that will also help... I really hope something will work! Last night was so bad again, I couldn't help but cry out of frustration. I feel like a bad mom
  • You can also try probiotics. Some babies that really makes a difference with. Just so you know, it takes 2-3 weeks for the dairy to be out of your and the baby's system. So if you do an elimination diet, don't get discouraged after a day or so if it doesn't work. I didn't notice a difference with my little girl till after two weeks. But then it was a night and day difference. After that, if I ate something with dairy in it she would start with the rash, crying, gas, projectile vomiting.. It could just be the type of formula that she is allergic too, so you might just have to play around with that and your diet. Is it worse after you feed her with the formula or after you nurse her?

There are colic drops that come with a probiotic in them. It helped my baby. It could also be reflux like suggested before. We are currently monitoring ours to see if she has reflux.

It was my diet that was effecting my LO. I am strictly formula feeding at this time as I feel it is helping big time. She use to cry every night from 1-5. She hasn't done that since I switched to formula. She is more relaxed, full and happier. I know it's not for everyone but it works for us! I use enfamil gentlease

Oh, and she suffered from constipation. That was because of my diet. We use miralax as prescribed by the doctor.
