So I scheduled my anatomy scan today for July 7th and it done radiology versus Ob/gyn and I'm just curious as to why that is or what is different about the testing? What is it like? What should I expect?
I'm lurking, but I had mine at 21 weeks. It's a very detailed ultrasound where they will check everything you can think of. They will take note of and measure all the organs and bones, the level of fluid, weight and length of the baby, look at the circulation of blood through the heart, they even look at the glands in the brain. They'll check the location of your placenta as well. They will also look for signs of any kind of defect such as a heart defect or a chromosomal defect. It takes about 20-40 mins depending on if baby is moving. If baby is moving a lot, it will take longer to get all the measurements. If you're lucky, they'll be able to tell you the sex also. It's basically just a very long detailed ultrasound. Then, the doctor will fill you in on what they find. Enjoy your long peek at baby!
I just had mine on monday. I was able to do mine at my obgyn office bc they have the newer equipment. They check fir everything. The only thing they did not check was the flow if blood to all four chamber of the heart. And thats bc of the position of the baby. He was being very stubborn. And was making faces when we were soing the 3d part. They told ne to come back at my next appointment to have the flow to the heart lookes at bc the baby will be bigger. But the dr was not concerned at all. Everything looked great. And to me to me it was ok with the second ultrasound, juar means I get to see my blessing again.
Mine is also at the hospital radiology department. As the PP said it is a much more in depth and detailed look at our little people. Also, in my case, part of the reason it is being done through radiology is because their ultrasound machine is more sophisticated and gives a better picture of what's goin on in there. Have fun and enjoy the experience!!!
Also don't be surprised when the tech doesn't tell you anything. They scan has to be read by a doctor first. You'll get the results at your next appointment. They will show you everything but can not comment or diagnose anything.
My OB does the ultrasounds in the radiology department of the hospital. I honestly feel much better having my OB do the u/s than having a tech do it. When I lived elsewhere they had a tech do the ultrasound and she had to call in the radiologist about a dozen times! It made me feel like there was something seriously wrong. All was well, but I was mad that she caused me to needlessly worry.
