Highlights?

Sooooo upon my suggestion, DH is reading The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips, and Advice for Dads to Be. I'm super excited that he's taking an interest! Something that came up in his reading was about having hair dyed or highlighted. The book suggests that women don't do it, and definitely not in the first trimester.

I have an appointment next Thursday (I'll be 5 weeks, 6 days) for a partial highlight. I'm leaning towards going to my appointment and asking my stylist to be careful not to get anything on my scalp- even if that means a bit of an ombré look. That's my compromise here! Is this something I should be more worried about?

I hate buying into the fear culture, and to me this seems a bit excessive. What are your thoughts?

Re: Highlights?

  • It is typically advised against, but most will tell you it's okay as long as it's in a well ventilated area.

  • But yeah, I would also say avoid getting it done in the first tri.

I had mine done before I knew I was pregnant. I think there are varying opinions on highlights specially. In my what to expect book it says highlights are okay bc the chemical doesn't touch the scalp. I didn't even think of the chemicals you inhale though.

  • I think the risk is probably minimal, but at the end of the day you just need to ask yourself if its worth even a minimal risk. For me personally I say not worth it, but then again we have had trouble trying to concieve so maybe Im just more paranoid.
  • I think I'll switch it to just a hair cut- it's really not worth it to me. Besides- she does 30 minute cuts and her station is out of the way of others (near the front door so there is always a nice breeze!) so this will probably be best for now. I can revisit my thoughts in the second trimester. Thanks ladies!

That's how I feel about it, not worth the risk to me.

  • It varies by the type of color/product your stylist may be using and it is probably minimal risk due to the changes in products over the years(this was a much bigger issue in say the 80s and 90s) Ultimately you have to decide if your hair looking a certain way is worth whatever risk may be there. If you do decide to get them done make sure you tell your stylist because the chemicals may react differently due to your hormones(my stylist was telling me about a time when one of her customers wanted red and it turned like fire engine red because the customer was pg. She didn't know and would have used a different shade to compensate of she had known. She was able to fix it tho). You also should make sure you are in a well ventilated space and preferably the first appointment of the day before the fumes from other customers build up for the day.

I was thinking about this the other day too, totally sucks because I have major roots showing and a wedding to go to at the end of the month.
But oh well, not going to risk it. Just really makes me wish I would have take care of it sooner!!

I had mine highlighted in my second and third trimester with my first pregnancy. I did skip it during the first tri though.
  • I'm a licensed cosmetologist and it is completely okay to have your hair colored while pregnant nothing to worry about. Take your mommy time and get your hair done!
  • I remember reading somewhere that the chemicals weren't really a risk to the baby, but to make sure it's well ventalated and try not to go at a busy time because the smell might really upset your stomach. I can't remember where I read it, but I'm sure you could google it. I'd also talk to the cosmetologist about it if you're worried.

  • My understanding was just to stay away from heavy fumes, which is why I think they say to avoid all over color. My salon is very open and I never smell a thing. I planned on getting a partial highlight in July.

I think I'll definitely skip the first tri and wait until I consult with my CNM and do some more research. My stylist is really great and the weather here has been beautiful- so I'm sure she wouldn't even mind cutting my hair outside since there is plenty of space to do so. I emailed and asked if she'd be willing to switch me to just a hair cut and if she'd be ok cutting my hair outside. If not, her station is right by the door and my appointment is during off hours, so I feel good about the hair cut. Thanks for everyone's feedback!

Edited bc there are plenty of totally safe ways I can have mommy time AND make my hair look good- highlights are just a bonus!
