Preemies

My LO was born three months early in December but his development is like he was born on his due date in March. Has anyone else had a preemie? And how has your LO been developing?

Re: Preemies

  • My son was born 34 weeks and was 3 pounds and now approaching 4 months in a couple days he's right on track he's trying to crawl teething cooing which melts my heart every time! Lol he had a 3 week nicu stay and all in all he's right on track !
  • That's really great to hear. My little man was born at 26 weeks he was 2 pounds even and spent 4 months in the NICU. I'm worried he won't catch up to everyone. He's 12 pounds now but he's not doing what other babies are doing. Like holding himself up while on his tummy or rolling over. Just curious how other preemies are adjusting.

No worries!!!!! Do not compare! he is a strong individual and God bless you for being able to deal with such a long stay in the nicu. But just think of how far he has come! And once he starts your gonna feel like you blinked and he just started running lol my son is still really small in new born clothes but I just encourage him everyday and do a lot of floor activities with him and talking and holding his back up for a little bit to help him get comfortable with sitting. I wish u the best!
  • My first born was born at 25 weeks- 1 pound 13 ounces. It took her about 2 years to fully catch up, but at 4 years old you'd never know she had such a rocky beginning. She's reading fluently and has completely caught up to her peers! Doctors say to use your child's adjusted age not actual age when thinking about developmental milestones until 2 years old.
  • My firstborn daughter came at 33 weeks. She's 2 1/2 now. She was a few months behind on each milestone, but eventually hit them when she was ready. All in her own time. She's currently receiving Early Intervention Services since she is non verbal.

I wouldn't worry too much, every child develops at a different rate. A baby who rolls, crawls, talks, walks, etc. early has no correlation to future adult intelligence. However, if you have any fears, voice them to your pediatrician. They can always refer you to early services if needed.
