Tendinitis on my Right Foot - ankle hurts !

I went to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl this past Sat so I walked more than usual. I haven't been going out a lot since I was diagnosed with SCH 3 weeks ago. I was wearing flats and I walked very slowly. I noticed that my ankle hurts a little at the end of the night. It hurts more today. I wonder if the pain is related to the pregnancy. I stood quite a bit when we were waiting for the shuttle to take us back to our car.

uPDATE: the pain has gone up the ankle to the area below the calf as is today 6/1. The ankle is also a little swollen today.

I went for a leg ultrasound today because my nurse worried it may be a blood clot. Luckily it is not but the doctor thinks it may be tendinitis due to excessive walking. Anyone been through this? Is there anything you can do to reduce swelling and pain? How long did the pain go away?? But since I am currently dealing with SCH, any additional issue is a concern to me.

  • I really doubt that your SCH and ankle pain are connected. More likely than not you just walked a little more than you're use to doing and/or rolled it. Were you walking slower than usual? You might have thrown off your normal walking pattern which can cause some discomfort.

That being said, I'm not a doctor.

  • This morning the pain has moved up from my ankle to the area below my calf. I told my nurse about the pain and she wanted me to go to the hospital right away in case it is a blood clot. I got a leg ultrasound and there is no signs of blood clot. But they think this may be tendinitis. So they want me to check again next week during my regular OB visit.
  • Hormones can cause your joints to loosen and relax. My ankle is also sore because I went to cross the straight and rolled my ankle while wearing flats... I literally stepped off the curb. Anything is possible right now. Try staying off it as much as you can.

I, too, have tendinitis in my Achilles and peroneal tendons. It has flared up during pregnancy, but I haven't considered it necessarily related. I exercise regularly, and I always have trouble with it flaring up from time to time--I figure pregnancy will be no different in this area.
  • @jaybee1111 What did your doctor recommend as treatment?
  • I had tendinitis similar to what you've described when I was in high school, and I've noticed it the last couple weeks if I walk around in sandals or flats.
My doctor recommended a number of stretches, like flexing and pointing of the foot. Also, be sure to wear supportive footwear when walking.
  • I get reoccurring leg pain due to a previously detached Achilles and breaking my ankle 3 times. I definitely get flair-ups during pregnancy due to tendons relaxing and then the added weight. It sounds like your Doctor has a firm handle on things. I'm not a Doctor but it doesn't sound related to you SCH, just pregnancy stretching.
  • @mandy0360- the ER doctor did not give me any recommendation and just discharged me. He said I can take tynenol if the pain is unbearable. I asked if a heated message would help and he said maybe. I am going to see my OB next week and I will ask her more. It does hurt a little when I walk so I try not to walk a lot. I am working at home these days due to my SCH.
  • I have tendentious in my wrists and ankles.  Ice and rubbing, tendon with the grain and REST always helped me. It tends to flare up and then one day it will just be gone.  I did use a brace sometimes that helped as well, but it doesn't sound like yours is in a place that can be braced easily.

Resurrecting this thread bc I'm having a flare up of tendinitis. I'm having a problem in both ankles (one more than the other). I've been trying to ice, elevate, and rest, but I want to get back in the gym on Monday. I usually walk on the treadmill on an incline, but I think that's my main problem. Any other decent ways that y'all are getting cardio these days? My daddy suggested the recumbent bike, but we only have one at my gym and I don't really like it. Also, any other remedies or ideas for the tendinitis?
  • Last year at this time, I was in a walking boot for a bone bruise, tendonitis, and damaged ligaments caused by blunt force trauma to my ankle. Ie, my dumb ass smashed it with a bowling ball. The hit caused the damage to the tendon. Well its flaring up now during the pregnancy. I thought maybe because of the extra tacos and pizza I'm eating. Who knows.

Elevate and ice your ankle whenever you can. Also, I had a prescription steroid cream for the tendonitis. It helped. Not sure if it's safe during pregnancy but if icing and elevating doesn't work, you can ask your doctor about it or at least other options to help the healing process.

Thanks @helskos. I feel like the extra weight is definitely a factor, but there isn't much we can do about that. I'm kinda mad at myself bc I was just at the doc yesterday and didn't even ask about it. I'm icing now and I've been off of my feet for most of the day, but I still have pain. I just really need/want to be able to exercise to keep my weight gain under control (I have little food willpower, haha), so being sidelined is quite annoying. Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Thank you. I definitely feel your pain with not being able to exercise. I fought my doctor tooth and nail because I wanted to remain active and run. He told me that a couple of months of rest now to make the ankle better will be worth it down the road. Of course your recovery shouldn't take that long but make sure to give your ankle ample time to rest.

Perhaps try the bike like your father suggested. The elliptical might also be a lower impact so might not irritate your ankle. There's also the row machine. If you are the outdoorsy type you could go canoeing or kayaking, gives you good upper body work out. Hope you only need a couple days rest and your ankle feels better by Monday!
