I feel like I have been hit by a bus but don't worry ladies I've got clean big girl panties on :) Just wondering if anyone has pregnancy safe cold and flu remedies I could try all cold and flu tablets/syrups say do not use while pregnant or consult your Dr before use. So far I have simple Panadol to keep my temp down, vicks vapour rub and throaties for my cough. Any suggestions welcome

  • I have never heard of Panadol.  Not sure if you're from the US or not, so not sure if brand name information would work for you.  Things like hot showers, saline sprays, and hot tea might help with any congestion.  There have been lots of other threads on this board about the topic.  A search should bring up some other great ideas for you.

  • Panadol also called paracetamol it's used to treat pain and fever and well known as safe during pregnancy. I'm from New Zealand so medications are probably called something different there.
  • I, like your medication labels, would suggest calling your doctor.

  • @anikajoy I have an appointment with Dr but couldn't get in earlier than Friday I'm looking for safe ideas to help until then thanks
  • I would try calling.

I also have had luck going to a pharmacy and talking to the pharmacists. They usually have a better idea about over the counter drugs and what works during pregnancy.
  • I would suggest getting what is save to help you sleep (in US it would be Tylenol PM or Unisom) taking it and just passing out. Sleep is always best for a cold.

Have been in bed last 2 days sleeping as much as I can it's easier when I can breathe tho. I'm feeling ripped off as I got my flu shot last week so was hoping I wouldn't end up like this.
So lucky to have help with school drop offs ect
  • I have been sick for 5 days.  And this minimal medicine thing sucks!  However, I went to my acupuncturist last night, she needled my face and it drained almost immediately. She needled my chest as well and my dry cough became productive within a few hours.  Best $50 I have spent in a while. I can breathe!!!

  • @Emma&Shayne - I wish more people had access to a provider like mine. I forget that I'm in the minority.. At the very least, when I have a question for my doctor, I get a call back from a nurse within a couple of hours.

I wish that was the case. I'm not sick enough to require a trip to the emergency room and the only other option is to triage at the Dr which is just wait until I could be seen but it's worse case first so I'd be there all day they are more for broken bones etc so I'd feel like a fraud
  • I hope u get to feeling better soon.

As far as the congestion aspect, if you're having that, I just try to keep well-hydrated to loosen things up.  I've been dealing with allergies the past month or so, and it definitely sucks to have to tough it out on just tylenol and extra fluids... :(
  • Not being able to take meds blows. Sorry you aren't feeling peachy!

Do you had a humidifier? I know hot showers rule but it's probably not the best idea to indulge in those too much while pregnant. Maybe some eucalyptus oil to clear your sinuses?

I feel exactly the same. Doc said fluids and rest. I'm finding moaning helps too :-(

  • Just had a long bath feeling much more clear headed.
Back in bed now, hubby is being amazing. I hope you have someone looking after you
  • Honey and lemon in hot water helped me. Olbas oil/ eucalyptus oil in the shower steam also helped. It sucks not being able to take decongestants. It went after about a week.
  • My MIL makes hot toddies with hot water, honey, squeeze of lemon, and about 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. It can have a pretty sharp taste (add more honey if you need to) but it works to clear up congestion.
