Anyone Have Any Experience With Hypnobabies?

My DW and I have signed up for this class.  It uses hypnosis techniques to help for a calm and potentially pain free delivery.  I am skeptical about the pain free part but think anything that will help me be calm and collected as I push a watermelon out of my lady parts is good.  We talked to our midwives before registering and she says the techniques and great but the course tends to make people a little extra combative around medical intervention.  I am not combative by nature.  DW is extremely combative by nature, but I'm the one having the baby so I get to make the calls and am not worried about this element of the course.

I am just curious if anyone has taken this class and if they found it valuable?  It is way expensive (500+) so that's a downside.  We have already paid, so I guess I am just curious about other people's experiences.

  • I was going to post about this today---you beat me to the punch.  I am very interested in finding out more, and would be very curious to hear about your experience.  When does your class start?

  • Everyone I know who has done it loved it.
I want to get the CDs this time so I can do it at home.

I have a friend who has had 3 natural births- 2 using hypno babies and said they were almost enjoyable. She said the relaxation techniques helped a lot to lee her in the zone.
  • I can't find a class around here, so I've been looking into the home study course.  I, too, am aghast at the price tag.  I figured if I was doing home study, I might still take an in-person birth/newborn class; but I may not be able to afford it.  If someone comes on here and swears the home study course is worth it, I'll give in.
  • This is great news.

We are signed up to do it in September-October.  We had to wait that long because I am working away for part of the summer (I am a director of a youth leadership program, and we run summer sessions).  I also think it will be good because I am off work all of November and apparently there is a fair amount of at home practicing you need to do.  I will have time for homework in November.  I am not due until November 28th.
  • I haven't heard of it, but I'm all for anything that helps keep a mother calm throughout the labor and delivery process.  For me, that includes medication.  This sounds interesting though and I will look into it.  I would bet if there is a home study course available there is a copy available for torrent.  I'm not advocating anyone actually do this to save $500 or more dollars, but just saying it probably exists.

Try some natural birth Facebook pages and see if anyone is selling. You might find them used for cheaper.
  • I have heard nothing but praise from my friends who used this method.  I have one friend that used the Bradley Method for their first and ended up not happy with their birth process.  For their second, they used hypnobabies and they were much happier with the process.  Best of luck!

  • Also wanna add to mothers afraid of the prices.. A lot of doulas are flexible and work with budget-conscious parents. It definitely doesn't hurt to ask! :)
  • I did it with my firstborn (via home study and the CDs) and had a great birth experience. I felt pressure, but no pain until crowning. All natural, no meds, and I was up and active after. I never manages to get myself into a deep trance, but it still really worked. Practice is important. Especially in the third trimester, practice ever time you have a bowl movement. It really helps.
