Over supply issues

Anyone else having trouble with over supply of breast milk? My little guy constantly pulls himself off the breast and I think it's because he gets overwhelmed by too much milk at once.

Anyone else have this? Any tips to reduce milk supply??

Mine pulls herself off too, and I'm engorged every morning. I never thought about over supply being a possible reason. I do pump on one side and nurse on the other most mornings so I'm more comfortable.

  • Try using gravity to help - nurse with baby in football, almost sitting straight up or try laid-back nursing (Google it if your unfamiliar)
Also try block feeding - if baby wants to eat again within 2-3 hours, feed on the same breast as the last feed. This ensures baby isn't getting too much foremilk which can lead to gassiness.
I would avoid pumping too much because that increases supply. Only pump as much as you need to for comfort. In time your body will scale back its production.
  • Yes, gravity is your friend. My left breast has a crazy let down and would choke DS. Poor guy. I started leaning back and it's been great! And like pp said, pumping will increase your supply. You could maybe express a little just to get the let down started though. And I also block feed. I didn't this early with DS1 and I already see a big difference in gas issues.

This is my issue too.the worst of it is my little girl as a defence mechanism when all of the milk is shooting at her is compressing my nipple and it hurts like a son of a .... I'm using the Jack Newman cream which is helping. Her latch is perfect too. For the first few days when engorgement was bad I'd soak them in a hot bath and express just enough for comfort as to not stimulate more milk production. I'd be sure to massage them good where there were little lumps forming from the ducts starting to block. I'd pump just a little off if I needed to as well. I do find football hold helps, and I lay right back when feeding as others suggested as well. Eventually it got better for me with my other kids but it did take a good two to three months.
Sometimes they will suggest using a nipple shield to help slow down the flow but I wouldn't recommend it because then you can run into latch issues, and like I said the milk production will regulate eventually. I also make sure to drain both breasts at every feeding because milk left in the ducts can more easily lead to mastitis.
  • Yes! I feel so bad especially in the morning when I squirt my poor LO in the eye or something. Idk what to do about it. I usually try to express some off into a burp cloth so he can feed. I hate "wasting" it tho
  • Pump for 2-3 minutes before feeding and it will make the breast softer. Which makes it easier for baby to latch and decrease the pressure when I feel the let down coming I sit my LO up so its not so bad.
  • I have been using a nipple shield and it has helped so much!
