anatomy scan today

Hi mamas! We had our anatomy scan today and the doctor said that they saw echogenenic intracardiac focus on baby girls heart... unfortunately it wasn't my actual doctor today, but the nurse practitioners, who didn't explain anything. She just said "not to worry and it just means you get another ultrasound in 4 weeks".

Is anyone familiar with this? Any info or experiences is greatly appreciated.... I am one stressed out, worried mama right now! :(

Re: anatomy scan today

  • I don't have any experience with this, but wanted to say I'm sorry you're in this situation.  Waiting for more information is so difficult and Google (especially WebMD) can be a scary place.  Positive thoughts your way.

  • I have nothing helpful to tell you but prayers for your baby girl! I am sure everything will be fine! Try not to stress, I would call and request to speak to your normal doctor.

I would too, that's very insensitive of the nurse practitioner to throw some huge term your way with no real explanation. I'm sorry.
  • Hang in there, if the NP said that there isn't anything to worry about, I am sure she is right.  And brightside-you get to see your baby again in a month!  Regardless, sending positive vibes your way!

  • Thanks girls! I'm not seeing too much scary stuff online..thankfully.. other than increased risk for chromosomal defects.... it's just so hard not to worry! How do they expect us to wait 4 weeks for more answers? It's torture! I think I'm going to call and ask to speak to my doctor when she is available. The NP just really brushed it off and I was in shock and didn't know really what to say..

Do some research and write all your questions down. Then call your doctor and get the answers. I agree it's not right for them to make you wait 4w without having an opportunity to ask your questions.
  • We had this with DD and everything is perfectly fine. They say it can be a marker for Down Syndrome but that alone is a weak marker. Initially my OB thought it was a ventral septal defect so we got sent to an MFM who said, "nope, an echogenic foci." He said it's just a small calcium deposit that usually resolves on it's own. They offered me the MaterniT21 test (I had a 1:321 risk for Down Syndrome before that) and it was all negative. DD is happy, healthy, and no heart issues.

  • Thank you for the info!! Glad your DD is healthy! They did my blood tests today too so I suppose I will know more by my next appt. I think I'm going to try to be seen earlier than 4 weeks if possible.... it seems like a very long time to have to wait for answers. Did they know before baby was born that everything was okay?

We just found out the same thing on Friday. We declined the first trimester screening and we are thinking about declining the bloodwork again. It is scary though. We are also scheduled for another ultrasound in 4 weeks. The perinatologist was not concerned. After leaving we were pretty freaked out still so we also called our midwife and she wasn't worried either. That is a little reassuring, but I think I am going to be a little worried until the baby actually gets here. Keep us updated with your follow up ultrasound.
