Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Have to wake baby to eat

I have an 18 day old. The first 3 weeks I would feed him every 3 hours or so. However the past 3 nights he will go to sleep at 1:30am and two out of the three nights I have woken him up after 7am to change his diaper and eat. This sometimes happens during the day too. He does stay awake some during the day, has no problem eating and is giving me lots of wet diapers. Should I be concerned that he can sleep 6+ hours at a time?

  • Hmmm, what does the Pedi say? Is your LO gaining weight just fine? Wet diapers are good but when your LO is just over 2 weeks he still needs to eat quite frequently BUT I would leave it up to your Pedi about whether or not you need to wake him.

  • He is definitely gaining weight!  I have a Ped appointment coming up and was going to ask about it then.  If he was acting different than normal when he was awake I would definitely be giving them a call, however he's his normal self!  He went through a growth spurt about a week ago and during those few days he constantly wanted to eat.  It was the longest 3 days of my life!
  • My LO is 10 days old and she sleeps from 11pm-5/6am every nigh. She's been gaining weight incredibly well so ped said to just enjoy the sleep!
  • I would wake him during the day but not at night . I would only let him go a specific amount of time without eating , maybe set your alarm for five -six hours . But check with your doctor first .
  • If he is gaining, I wouldn't worry about  it and enjoy the sleep.

If he's gained back all of his birth weight let him sleep.
Me 26 DH 31. Off oral contraception since 1/2012. Actively TTC # 1 since 4/2012. CD3 bloodwork, hsg normal 6/2013. SA performed 7/2013 - low count, low motility. First RE appointment 9/4/2013. Were told SA not good enough for IUI. Repeat SA and additional bloodwork ordered. RE suggests DH see a urologist. http://www.fertilityfriend.com/home/3e32d9/thumb.png
  • I agree with sunrise. Babies are hardwired to let you know when they are hungry, thus the screaming. Maybe check in with your Pedi to see if it's normal, but it sounds fine to me.
