I've been eating sushi, deli meat, runny eggs, soft cheeses...etc,etc.
I have been as well, not to the extreme and no raw sushi just cooked rolls. Deli meat was toasted and running eggs was my bils doing and I couldn't tell him I couldn't have runny eggs so I just ate them lol.
As others have said, if you want to be on the safe side just get cooked rolls or veggie rolls. I've read as long as you've eaten there before and know it's a reliable, clean place it would be ok to have raw sushi once and awhile. I definitely plan on indulging this pregnancy. I also had lunch meat today to (not even warmed up!!) so I guess take my advice with a grain of salt
Motherrisk Canada (from Sick Kids hospital) says Sushi is fine.
Virtually all fish is frozen before it is transported and served in Canadian restaurants, unless you live RIGHT on the ocean. That kills any possible parasites and makes it safe for consumption when defrosted. Just ask your sushi restaurant, so you're absolutely sure it's been frozen. and you're fine to consume sushi.
The other worry is high Mercury fish, so limit how much you eat of the list of high mercury fish like normal - it's no different in sushi. The only ones to limit consumption of that would likely show up on a sushi menu are tuna and mackerel.
But salmon sashimi is totally fine! Woo!! (And so are soft cheeses made with pasteurized milk, which is almost all of them. Deli meats are OK'd by Motherrisk too, but runny eggs are enough of a possible risk to avoid.)
Had some last night...lots of raw tuna and raw salmon and it was delicious! Been to this place many times and it's a high end and high quality place so I'm not worried. Best thing I've ate since I got pregnant. But I've also been eating boars head deli meat and feel fine. Honestly I feel as long as you know it's good quality food then you are ok. Also eat in moderation. My sister in law ate all the forbidden foods with all her 4 pregnancies and no issues. I feel like some of the processed junk food we eat at times is worse than any raw sushi or deli meat.
I am obsessed with sushi right now. Sticking to the cooked stuff just to be on the safe side. I had some for lunch today and it was so good. Nothing has tasted as good as my lunch sushi in weeks. I can't wait to eat it again.
Deli meat on it's own won't hurt the baby, and not all deli meat has the bacteria that causes miscarriage. Some of it does, though. It's just a risk. You can be exposed to it and not have any outward symptoms, which frightens me.
I'm guilty of eating goat cheese, but it was pasteurized so I think that kills bacteria? I wouldn't eat deli meat or hotdogs anyway though bc I'm a veg.
Also... I wonder what moms in Japan do? Surrounded by delicious sushi...
@Praying41 That sounds amazing! Salmon is really good for growing baby too. You're totally right about the food aka deli meats being of good quality, also as long as it doesn't stay un refrigerated for hours it should be fine. Like you said the processed junk food we eat is worse!
