Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Pacifier weaning..

my daughter is 21 months old. We recently when on a 2wk vacation and ever since then she has become quite attached to her paci. I'm curious when fellow moms decided it was time to ditch the paci, also how did you do it??

Re: Pacifier weaning..

  • My DD was 18-mo and using the pacifier for naps and overnight, but when we went on a 2-week vacation, she used it 24-7!

I planned to wean DD at 6 mos, then 12 mos, then 2 yrs (she was teething and used it full-time during a vacation)... so I did at 3 yrs. I had tried to find a new lovey for DD along the way but her pacifier was her lovey. Even so, by 3 yrs she was using it only for sleep. We did it cold turkey. I donated some maternity stuff, DH donated his fat pants and DD donated her pacifiers. DD was super ornery for a full month afterwards - but then my MIL was visiting and that could have contributed - and/or the age. DD would say she wanted her paci back and then say to herself, "no, no, a new woman has mommy's shirts, a new man has papi's pants and a new baby has my pacifier..." Broke my heart and made me proud. She still hasn't attached to any one object and instead cycles through different things each few days (this week the bathroom walrus has received much focus).

  • Thank you for sharing your experience! I am attempting to get her to only use it at naps or bedtime. So far today has been a sucess! We made a big deal about her paci now living in her crib, so she can only have it when she goes to bed. We put it in a container and have her stuff animal dog watching over it while she's not there. Hoping it works! For now I would be ok with her having it to sleep
  • That's cute! I am reading "Playful Parenting" which is about dealing with situations with kind humor. I'd say yours is a similar approach - sensitive, thoughtful. I like it!

  • I weaned at 5 months and just threw them all away and never gave her another. She barely cared or noticed. I will do the same with future kids because it's way easier to get rid of it before she is attached. Other moms I know who had older kids attached to a paci did the same thing and it worked for them too. The kids will always find another way to soothe.
