How to deal with vaginal tear

i tore when my LO came out, she said it was just a stage 2 and internal but she was stitching me up for like 45mins and I cannot pee or sit or do anything. Percocet and Motrin are pretty much only things that help. Sitz bath sucks, I'm out of ice pads so I'm using other ice (temporary relief), using numb spray which is short term relief as well. Does anyone have any other ideas? I wish there was some ointment or something. This mama is in lots of pain and just wants some relief!!!

  • Keep using the ice, spray, and tucks pads on top of your pad. It helps cool things a bit. Try sitting on your hip (side) more than directly on your butt.

  • The best thing is to switch from laying on ur back to ur stomach. Just try staying off ur bottom as much as possible. I'm currently going through the same thing. It's really painful. And I just want to be so active. I've been using Tylenol and ice packs. My mom recently recommended preparation h. It promotes healing. But rest is the best for it.
  • They gave me dibucaine ointment (pain relief) and epifoam (steroid) uo promote healing. Worked really well for me!

  • Sit on your boppy! It acts a lot like a hemmoroid ring/pad thing and helps you not put pressure on your sore bits.
  • I hated the sitz bath, found it absolutely awful. But I took a regular bath in my tub today and it felt amazing!!! My DH had to check on me because I was in there for so long.

And I agree with PP about sitting on a donut cushion or some sort. I am using a nursing pillow to sit on. DH said I should glue it to my butt because I'm taking it everywhere with me.

I'm sorry you're in so much pain! It took about 2-3 weeks for me to feel better... Like PP said, sit on the boppy. Thankfully your doc sent you home with pain meds! Wishing you a quick recovery!
  • Be careful with regular baths. They are breading ground for bacteria and can cause infection where your stitches are.

Thanks everyone!! I actually got a bag of ice and sat on boppy and iced last night. Of course during a feeding this morning I got Indian style to change LO and felt awful pain! I have to THINK! Ugh. I continue w tucks, ice, boppy and spray! Thank ya'll so much.
  • When I was in the hospital after giving birth last week, the nurses gave me ice packs that they made using a size 1 disposable diaper and ice. They even taught me how to make them so I could continue using them at home. Take a diaper and cut off the top part of the waist band in the back (pretty much the part above the tabs). At the cut, open up the diaper and stick your hand inside to create a pocket (the middle of the diaper where the absorbent layer is). Fill with ice. Fold down the cut waist band a few times and secure using the tabs. Wear inside your underwear. As the ice melts, the absorbent layer in the diaper soaks it up. These have been my best friend as my tear is healing.
  • Best spray ever! I have a 2nd degree natural tear this time and had a 2nd degree epistiotomy with my oldest.

  • I had forgotten about that pain until now. :/ I actually filled condoms with water and froze them. They're durable, maneuverable, and you can keep them slender so you don't have to sit spreadeagle with a gigantic ice bag.
  • I second the earth mama spray. Works great
  • I also have a stage 2 and have been pretty uncomfortable at times. I know many people are recommending ice, but it should only be used for the first 24 hours, after that it can slow down healing because it causes vasoconstriction (which is tough because it feels great). The Earth Mama spray is great and the also make a new mama bottom balm that is very soothing. Ibuprofen has helped some, provides pain relief and reduces inflammation. Might be TMI but I'm so nervous about trying to have a BM for the first time
  • Hi ladies. I had my LO on May 2nd and even though she was just shy of 7lbs I tore several places that required several stitches.
I have internal tears and a small tear by my "lady love button" that didn't require a stitch. Pain was terrible to say the least.

I was given Percocet and ibuprofen for pain and swelling while in the hospital. I was also given Dermoplast spray, sitz bath, and a squirt bottle to use, but that's it. I went home with no prescription for pain management or anything.

The only thing that helped a tiny bit was the Dermoplast spray, but to be honest it didn't help a lot. What helped me the most was taking really warm baths and letting the stitches air dry for 15 minutes or so on the bed afterwards. I also wore and still wear pants that are loose in between my legs. It helps obviously to keep pressure off of that area.

It sounds like you're doing everything that you can do. I really hope that your pain decreases soon.
