List of needed things for FTMs?

Hey ladies,
I am still early in my pregnancy but I want to start getting prepared on what that's are an absolutely must have for first time moms, both for baby and for myself. Anyone have a suggested list or found anything online that's been helpful?
Thank you in advance and good luck to you all.

Re: List of needed things for FTMs?

  • The book "Baby Bargains," or the website Lucie's List.

I would say a boppy pillow is a must! You can google this and print out a list too.

  • Baby Bargains!!! With my first we registered for everything it recommended and it was all huge wins!!! The one thing we registered for that wasn't recommended (a swing) sucked awful.

For you while pregnant, not enough people talk about the glory of compression socks. They're good for you not pregnant but will be wonderful even more so when you start getting bigger and the ankle swelling by the end of the day is less comfortable. Just look into it! I promise you won't regret it. (There are tons of fun colors for runners which would be just fine. I always did below the knee, but I know some people who did full leg, I wouldn't do sleeves because you'll want the compression on your feet, too).

Be willing to compromise. Despite how much research you do on baby bottles or cloth diapers or sippy cups or whatever else, sometimes baby doesn't like it and won't use it: my son never took a dang paci. He also would never sleep in his crib (needed boobs 24/7!!!), so just take that with a grain of salt sometimes.

Make sure you're ready to have baby in your room for 6 months or so. Some people stop rooming in earlier, some keep them longer. So if the nursery isn't ready, no big deal. Baby will spend little time in there for a while. My first day home with my son I pulled practically everything out of his room and set it up in mine.

I used a boppy pillow, but I've heard some people say the breast friend or whatever pillow was way better.

The Newborn Rock and Play Sleeper was a God send. Every mom I know I've recommended it to swore by it as well. My son ended up with acid reflux do its angle helped him with the reflux, too. And it's so easy to use.

The piano playmat was a huge favorite. The seahorse for white noise was a huge hit. I used a free app on my phone for the white noise. Look into Happiest Baby on the Block. I didn't read the book even though I have it, but the video helped me with my son.

  • I really felt like the first time around we had way more than we actually needed.
    These were my must haves:
-a portable crib or small bassinette, for next to your bed. especially if you want to breastfeed.
-a timer/timer app for feedings and changes
    -swaddles
    -A bouncer or swing
    -white noise machine
    -boppy or something similar
That's all I can think of Right now! But really, you need less than you think! (or at least less than what's out there lol)
  • Ditto Baby bargains!!
There are so many products some moms swear by and others didn't need you just do your research and decide what you think you'll need.

For me, a carrier (I have a becco), a sound machine (sound spa), cloth diapers, a plug in swing, Woombies, and a snap and go stroller have been my favorite things!

  • I would recommend having a friend with kids look at your registry or go with you. When you register they recommend an insane amount of stuff, some of which you really don't need or at least not as much as is recommended.

I'm pregnant with #2 and some of the things I think were the best with #1 are:
    - Aden and anais swaddle blankets. They are huge so you will get a lot of use out of them. My 20 month old toddler still uses his daily. They're also nice and light to pack in the diaper bag and stand up to the test of time.
    - those swaddle outfits because I had a Houdini baby who got out of every swaddle I tried to do.
    - waterproof bottle labels if your baby will be in daycare. They sell them at babies r us. I used a sharpie for a while but it just kept washing off every few uses.
    - O-Ball is a great first toy because baby can grab onto it because it has lots of holes. (Target sells it)
    - if you're cloth diapering, Lil Joeys newborn diapers. So soft and comfy and fit my 6 lb preemie right away. If you're disposable diapering, get nighttime diapers as well as daytime ones. Babies pee like crazy at night.
    - waterproof crib mattress protector. Just lay it under the crib sheet so you aren't having to wipe down the crib mattress in the middle of the night after an accident.
    - breast pump if you're going to be a working breastfeeding mom. Check with your insurance company. Mine gave me mine for free. And it's a nice double electric Ameda. They even threw in the storage bags and the carrying case.

  • For you:  Some sort of tummy belt (helps everything get put back into place) I swore by this 1st time around.

For baby : boppy (a must)
    car seat
    crib and crib sheet
my son loved a small, mechanical mobile over his crib
    bouncer
I used a stroller quite a bit (I had one that fit a baby seat)
    start stock-piling dipers and wipes.
    swaddle

I'm sure there is more but these are the main ones.. buy what you can used.  They are only in them a few months so look out for garage sales!
