    2) Injures they can cause if you get in an accident with a regular size car.

Wow, thanks for that helpful input.

Anyway - I also have a Ford Explorer and love it. The gas mileage can't compare to say a car, but the third row is quite roomy. I haven't had a car seat back there yet, but I would see no problem with one fitting back there. My SIL and her DH have a Honday Pilot with the third row and they're very happy with their SUV as well.

     GL!

  • 1.) What is it? The Ford Tauras X - it's a crossover/suv

2.) MPG? Highway about 25, local about 20-21

3.) Pro's/Con's - very roomy, great safety rating, comfortable, even with using the 3rd row there is still plenty of storage space in the back, all seats can fold down so you can transport your kayak (sorry this was on the brochure and we kept making fun of it). Can't really think of any cons - we love it.

4.) Is the third row actually functional? Yes, we've had several trips with people in the 3rd row.

5.) How does the carseat(s) fit? They fit fine, but cannot anchor in middle if you would want to do that.

  • 1. Mercury Mountaineer

    2. no idea, sorry

    3. its really nice and I like it, Its DH's car though so I don't drive it much

    4. It is, but it is also currently folded down for more cargo space

    5. Car seat fits good, but is close to touching DH's seat (driver's seat). I wouldn't say it is a tight fit though.

  • 1. Gmc Envoy XL

    2. 15-18

    3. It's a bigger car and I feel like my family is safer.

    4. Third row is functional, we have have my nephew sit back there with his booster seat and he was comfortable. My husband who is 6.2 sat back there with no problem.

    5. Carseats fit fine in mine.

We are getting a bigger suv with seating for7 instead of 8 and that way it is easier to get in the back when we bring friends or relatives with us. (Split row in the middle)

Although I understand your reason for saying this, come live in a state where you get FEET of snow at any given time in the winter and THEN tell me you don't want something like a SUV.

  • I currently have a Mazda CX9.  I love it.  It gets about 21 mpg (not great, but still ok).  It has a 3rd row, I think we have used once and it seemed like we had plenty of room.  The carseat fits great, but there you have to use it on one of the sides, there is not a latch system in the center.

I had a Volvo XC90 and did not like it near as much.  It also has a 3rd row which was pretty functional, but the gas mileage was much lower and it used premium gas.  It was brand new and had a lot of little rattles and did not ride near as smooth as the Mazda.  We got rid of it before I had to use a car seat in it so I'm not sure how it would have fit, but I assume it would have been ok because there was plenty of room in the backseat.

  • I've lived in PA and IN.  Snow tires on an all wheel drive car worked just fine.  Of course if there was more than a foot of snow we didn't go out right away until some of the roads were cleared.
  • I have a Ford Explorer, and I love it.  It's very roomy, but I don't actually use the 3rd row seat.  It usually stays down so that I have a lot of extra space for groceries, stroller, etc.

1.) What is it? LandRover LR3

2.) MPG? I don't know what their published mileage is but I average 15.5 consistently

3.) Pro's/Con's- Pro: super comfy, excellent accident protection, 3rd row and back seats fold completely flat which is excellent for hauling larger items Cons: 3rd row pretty small to accomplish the fold-flat feature, if purchased new it can be an expensive vehicle, requires premium fuel

4.) Is the third row actually functional? I've never, ever used mine and I've owned the car for two years. Because the seats fold completely flat, mine always stay that way since I'm contantly hauling our dogs or stuff in the back and never have enough passengers to need the 3rd row.

5.) How does the carseat(s) fit?

    ?

We have had a Honda Pilot and now have a Honda Odyessy

The pilot had a 3rd row, but when it was up there was no trunk space and it wasn't easy to get into the back seat but it got really good gas mileage and IMO you can't go wrong with honda they are really well made and you get a lot for your money plus they have great resale value

My odessy rocks, I swore I would never drive a minivan and I will admit its not as "cool" as my pilot but for all the features and the automatic doors its so nice with a baby, you can get into the back seat fairly easy, but as with the pilot I think it would be easier if the carseat was facing forward to make things even easier, great gas mileage and quality

  • We also have a Ford Explorer.

I'm not sure what the MPG is 18 maybe? I could be totally off on that.

I like having an SUV in the winter because the 4WD makes me feel safer on ice and it makes parking easier on a street filled with piles of snow. Our other car is a Nissan Altima and when we had DD we decided to get an SUV also because we needed more room when we go shopping and have the stroller with us. The Explorer is a great SUV and we love it.

The third row is very functional. I have two sisters that do not drive and they are with us a lot so the third row comes in very handy. The whole truck is roomy in that my sisters can both fit next to the car seat where in our Altima 2 bodies and a carseat in the back is a tight squeeze, but having the third row is great for when we have one extra person with us. We can easily fit 6 adults and the car seat when we have the third row up. Otherwise we keep it down to make room for groceries or whatever we have with us.

    Carseat fits fine, no issues.

  • i have a yukon and love it.  we took out the 3rd row seats but they are super easy to put in.  we've used them many times and everyone in the vehicle is comfy.  ditto pp about having pilot seat in 2nd row so ds's carseat is on the passenger side but it's so much easier getting him in and out there that i don't see a huge deal plus i've got side impact airbags, etc. so i feel pretty okay with him being there.  with me driving i get about 18 mpg but dh gets 15 or so!  i love it - we travel so much we need the extra room so to pp about being selfish bite me.

  • we haven't bought it yet but we have taken a test drive and done alot of research on the Nissan Pathfinder. It has a third row and while its not roomy for long trips its suitable for kids which is what we want it for.

    2) i think its 15 city

    3) Pros: it has lots of great feature you can get like a backup camera and visual display screen.. lots of cool stuff.

Cons: its big and will use more gas than our current vehicles.

    4) see above

    5) we didn't try the carseats but there looked to be plenty of room. latch system was only on the ends not middle seat.

We are in the same boat as you looking to upgrade. Thanks for posting this. i have some more vehicles to research now.

  • OMG. An SUV is selfish. I've heard it all.?

    Sigh. ?

Last weekend the only way we could get out of our homes was with an SUV, we had 1 foot of snow and the roads were not even plowed all day.     Now after having a child, I love having an SUV because I know WE are safe when we are driving, maybe I'm selfish because I choose to worry about myself and my safety on the road.  Oh, and the car I drive is a Subaru Outback, All Wheel Drive.

I live on the west side of the state (MI) and I know what you mean!!!  Plus, we are on the lake so we  get all of that lake effect snow that they can't/don't predict so you never know how long it will take for the plows to get out.  even snow tires wouldn't have done any good
