Baby's belly

so ever since my baby was born she's had a really round stomach. Not round like beer belly but round wide wise and it gets skinny around her hips. I've inserted a picture so it makes more sense. I'm just wondering if she's okay? It's really firm always and when I rub on it she almost acts as if it's uncomfortable. Haven't seen the doctor since she was 2 weeks old (she's 5 weeks now) and the doctor commented on it but all she said was stating the obvious that she's really round. Nothing else. So I'm just wondering if she looks or if this is normal. Btw the picture I posted she's sort of sucking in. Normally the roundness is worse.

Re: Baby's belly

  • I would get a second opinion from another doctor. Is there another pediatrician in your practice you can just schedule an appointment with?

My baby girls belly is the same way when she lays flat like that. We even seen a Ped. GI today (for other reasons) and he didn't say anything about how wide her belly was at all. If you're really concerned about it, just call another doctor and ask them to look at it :)

If you think touching or slight pressure on her tummy is uncomfortable for her I'd definitely at least call in and speak with the nurse at the pediatrician office. Explain your concerns and they will give you some advice or schedule to get you in as soon as possible.
  • Looks completely normal to me. I've seen a lot of newborns and their tummies are all like that

I would check with a Dr, but if it makes you feel any better, my baby girl is tiny, third percentile in weight but 75th in length, and she has very similar proportions, twig arms and legs, very little butt and hips, but a super round belly, esp after she eats- lots of little organs developing in there! Dr said it was completely normal at our two week appt a few days ago

Mine is like that too. She has a lot of gas and is constipated. I have to push her legs into her belly to try and help her poop. She pushes so hard.

The doctor told me to use gas drops too. I don't really see a difference using them though.
