Too early for round ligament pain?

This week I woke up with a sharp pain on my lower abdomen. Which I've felt before, and i thought it would go away. It lasted several hours.. I called my doctor and he told me to come in to check it out. Long story short he didn't think it was round ligament pain because it's too early, I guess. I'm 17 weeks. He sent me to the ER because he was worried and wanted to make sure it wasn't my appendix. After ultrasounds, MRI, urine sample, and blood work everything came back fine. And baby is fine too!! So... Now they think it's early Round ligament pain. This is my first pregnancy, I was just wondering when did your round ligament pains start? Thank you for reading.

Re: Too early for round ligament pain?

  • It's not too early for round ligament pain. It's actually right when it starts happening.
I've had it since 8-9 weeks.

Same, I started from around week 7, sharp pain that stops me in my tracks
  • I'm 17 weeks as well and have had round ligament pain since about 7-8 weeks along. Although it has always been a short stabbing pain that doesn't last very long.
  • It's so annoying how they keep saying it's early round ligament pain when I have expressed my concerns with other moms and they said the same, that they had it around 8 weeks or earlier. Or whenever. Thank you ladies! I just get worried and want to protect the baby.

The pain can last if you pull the round ligament, I did that at 5.5 weeks. It is possible to tear it, which requires surgery after birth.

Oh no! I had no idea. I'll be extra careful from now on. Thanks @anneof2
  • The pain lasted from 7am till 2am the next day. Now it comes and it goes.
  • Mine started before I knew I was pregnant (I found out at 6 weeks). It was more of a pulling in my lower abdomen that I noticed when I went for a long walk or if I was wearing tighter pants. Around 11 weeks I felt as if my insides were being stretched to the limit! Thankfully it hasn't feel super painful (not unbearable or where I need pain medicine) but definitely uncomfortable. I wonder why your doctor thought it was too early, my doctor told me to expect round ligament pain at my 10 week appointment. I'm glad you and your baby are okay. :-)
  • I don't get how 17w is too early for rlp. Mine started around 15 weeks or so. I'm 17+2 now.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I agree with everyone else. I've had it for a few weeks now (I'm currently 17w3d). Over the last few days it's been really bad but finally starting to calm down again.
  • Yeah I'd be pissed if my doctor told me it was too early, because that's pretty much the only pregnancy symptom I've had! I've had it since about week 7. I like to think it's comforting because it means baby is growing!
  • This is not my first kiddo so I really should know this, but what the heck is round ligament pain?
  • Thank you ladies!!!! This makes me feel better. Not sure why my doctor said it was early... Smh
  • This exact thing Happened to
Me Thursday and Friday, At 17 weeks , they actually thought I may be loosing her due to incompetent cervix ( typically Happens around 16-20 weeks ) but thankfully everything on my emergency ultrasound they did , looked great and all pain was from round ligament and sciatic nerve, I couldn't even walk Friday my whole right leg hurt so bad it was practically numb. The roung ligament pain alone is pretty rough. Hope you feel better soon!

So I think this question could go here... I ran a 10k on Saturday and I feel like I understand round ligament pain, however can round ligament pain extend to your groin? Doesn't feel like a cramp just a dull ache when I'm walking. If it's there tomorrow I'll call the doc. Just wondering if anyone else has gotten that type of ache?

Omg me too! This is my 3rd pregnancy and the first time I've ever had it! Pretty scary... :(
  • Ever since 12 or 13 weeks I've been achy all over down there.  Definitely not too early at 17 weeks.

I was told that since the pelvis widens a bit during pregnancy, some pain there is normal. It kind feels like round ligament pain but along the cervix down to the vagina.
