Debating renting house out for inauguration-wwyd?

We live right by Wash Dulles Airport, and 35 minutes from D.C.  People have been renting their houses out for ridiculous amounts ($10-$20k for the week!) for the inauguration.  We keep seeing it on the local news and we were thinking how much we could save for baby if we rent our house.  The catch is we have 2 cats and a dog so we'd have to put all the animals up somewhere for the week.  WWYD?

Re: Debating renting house out for inauguration-wwyd?

  • I would do it in a heartbeat!! even with the pet bills you'll make a killing!!!
  • Loading the player...
  • Heck yeah, I think I'd go for it!
  • I would totally do it. The cost of you and your animals staying elsewhere won't come close to $10,000.
  • my friend put hers on craiglist and no biters thus far....which is odd because its a great home, near the subway etc...no pets...

    i say...why not try?

  • Umm... thats Babies first year of college! I would rent ASAP! That is definitly a lot of money!

  • hells yes i would!  if i had fam near by to stay with that is... and if there was pet boarding available.
  • I have to admit if we are talking 10 to 20 thousand I think I would be renting out the house. I know it sounds alittle wrong but I mean think of the security that could bring with a newborn
  • I would do it in a minute. That's a lot of money!!!

  • If you have another place to stay it's a fantastic way to make some money for the little bundle... what an opportunity you have!!  I would go for it.  The only thing I would be concerned about is all my personal stuff.
  • Just think of it as a way to save for baby! I wish I lived a little closer. I am from Harrisonburg VA and we are 2.5 hours away. ALL of the hotels nearby are nearly booked and we are that far away! People are crazy. So my suggestion would be to board the animals and take a honeymoon weekend! The money would be totally worth it! I would do it!~
  • I vote yes! Send the pets to a pet-hotel, they will probably love getting pampered anyway! And if you get a couple grand for renting out your house, send the pets to a 5 star pet-hotel!
  • I'd totally do it! Can you find a hotel that takes pets? Best Western is usually dog friendly...
  • Two words....

    DO IT!

  • I would do it in a second too!  I would only be worried about insurance...because they probably won't cover something for a renter even if it is for a week.  But, that is alot of money!!!! Imagine if you put it in a 529, it would probably pay for all of college!
  • we live right in DC in a great neighborhood (chevy chase), very close to the metro and haven't had an offers.  we put our house on craigslist and the local listserve.  I would love to find out where people are offering 10-20k.  good luck if you do decide to rent it!
  • Go for it! If anything you'll have a super clean house, and a week away with your hubby!
  • My parents live in Ashburn. I live in Chantilly.  I was debating the same thing.  We were going to stay with my parents for a few days.  I say put the ad out there and see if anyone is willing to do it.

  • we used to live near sturgis south dakota and every year with the bike rally people rent their front lawns for 300 a day.  A girl I used to work with rented her house to the budweiser girls for 40K and they do it every year.  She's had her house paid in full.  So my opinion... RENT RENT RENT!
  • Good luck! ?We are on the Hill and staying for the Inauguration (we get to go!) and haven't heard about much moving on Craigslist around here either. But if you really want to rent your house I would put it on craigslist now and probably expect less than 10-20k (more like 5k for being out by Dulles). ?You may still be able to get a renter though. Good luck!

  • I would totally do it. I have a friend who is renting out his loft.

Take all your valuable paperwork, anything with social security info on it, etc. Make them sign a contract and document all of your valuables. Get a security deposit. If you have time, run a background check.

Thank about your salary and how much you could make in proportion to that, in just a weeks time!!

  • I am in Ashburn too and wish we could do it.  I say go for it if it isn't a hassle to get all 'personal' type info out for the week and go stay with family if they are close or head out a few hours and get a hotel.  I would think you will probably get a bit less than you are expecting just due to not being by a metro and a bit out of the city.  However, I can highly recommend the Loudoun County commuter bus, it is much better than metro!
  • Thanks, I think is a "do it".  Good luck to the other girls thinking of renting theirs, too!  It's going to be one crazy week in the D.C. area.
  • I would sleep in my car for 10 K for week!
  • Hey nearly-neighbor. We're in Alexandria.

Maybe someone has already asked this (didn't read everyone's replies), but where will you stay if you do rent out your house?

  • See a lawyer before you do anything. You want everything written out and clear what can and cannot happen in your house. Put all your important things into a?safety?deposit box at the bank. Yeah it might cost you 1k to get all this done but it is better that you protect your family.
