sushi or not to sushi?

I've heard it's OK as long as you know its from a reliable source. And also in small quantities.

Re: sushi or not to sushi?

  • There was a huge sushi recall here on the east coast so just be careful! 50 cases of salmonella I believe, but honestly if you crave it then don't deprive yourself, once in a while won't hurt you
  • I eat sushi and raw oysters just the same as I did before. I probably eat sushi about once a week.

The only items I've stayed away from that I used to eat before I found out is raw milk and cheeses.

  • As long as you are eating from a reputable source and limiting yourself to low mercury fish it should be fine. There's always a chance of food poisoning or parasites pregnant or not. It's a risk you have to decide if you want to take or not. If you are worried just stick with the cooked rolls, there are tons of delicious options.
  • I'm vegetarian, but I love vegetarian sushi! My favorites are avocado rolls and sweet potato rolls :)

I ate raw sushi about 3 times in my pregnancy. I would have eel sushi cravings like every week. Lucky eel is not raw. It drove my husband crazy lol.
@bpv101283 I love oysters but I been scared to eat them :(. Once this baby girl is out in going to an oyster happy hour!!!

I eat lots of salmon sashimi! It's actually fairly offensive to the Japanese culture that we think sushi is "bad" or "dangerous" in pregnancy. I wouldn't eat gas station sushi of course but anywhere that you trust where they handle the fish properly is an amazing way to get rich omega-3's. Incredible for the baby's brain development and all other sources are very weak in comparison. You're more likely to get sick from eating listeria-laced ice cream or improperly handled chicken! In Japan the recommendation is to eat MORE sushi than normal in pregnancy. I avoid tuna anyway because of the high mercury levels and sustainability issues but salmon is awesome!
  • I don't know that much about sushi I think there are ones that aren't raw.I have not wanted to eat anything undercooked at all. I usually got steak on the medium side but while pregnant have it med-well or well. I am high risk and figure with all the things that can go wrong, why add something else.
  • I would consult with your doctor, I love sushi and asked and he told me straight up no.
  • Doctors will always tell you no. It's personal choice. You can be afraid to eat something "you're not supposed to eat while pregnant" or you can indulge once in a blue moon with little to no harm. I've had rare steak and raw fish and my baby is growing perfectly and healthy. My friend is also pregnant and her doctor told her not to worry about all the dos and donts because most pregnant women drive themselves crazy over it.
  • Haha. For myself, it's easy! I HATE sushi, and I'm very allergic to shellfish.
  • Now to talk my husband into taking me in town for sushi, after all this talk about it.

I've indulged a few times in my salmon rolls and eel sauce. My midwife told me straight up no last time and then I did my own research and said forget it, there is a reason I'm craving it! Of course, it's personal preference on whether to indulge or not.
  • I've been avoiding ALL sashimi, just in case, or anything raw. Then again I live in the Midwest. Fresh Fish, what's that? (Unless it's catfish or another kind of river fish, but those are usually served fried around here.)

However, I LOVE me a basic Veggie Roll. I've also had a few tempura rolls....using a rule of preference for cooked rather than raw, just to be careful. On top of that, eating them from reputable makers. ie......no grocery store sushi for me. I'll eat them only when I know it's been made fresh for me.

I think as long as whoever is making the sushi is reputable and uses only the freshest ingredients, then the consumer should be fine. I'm just erring on the side of caution, and satiating my sushi cravings with the cooked variations.

  • Yum....this is making my craving for it worse!!! Lunch tomorrow for sure! I've been eating cooked sushi here and there, probably about 4 times since I got prego, since my favorite restaurant is 30 miles away :(. I love fish!!! The only thing I still don't feel good about eating is mussels, which are my absolute favorite!!! I'm eating a HUGE order as soon as I give birth! I say eat it if you want it and enjoy it, girl!
  • I go about once a week and as others have said eat more crab and shrimp tempura...cooked rolls.
  • I'm on my way to get some sushi with hubs right now, thanks to this thread. It's made the decision for supper much easier! Lol
