High-Risk Pregnancy

2 soft markers

Hi ladies! First time on this board. We went for our 20 week last Wed and found out we are having a boy! We were told at the ultrasound he looked good and congratulations. I went to visit my dr for a followup on monday. She was pleasant and then said they saw some things in the u/s that were concerning. Little guy has a cyst on his brain and enlarged kidneys. She said not to worry as she sees these often and they clear on their own usually. She wants me to go back to get a 2nd u/s with maternal fetal medicine to get a better look at his profile and etc. If these markers do not clear they would look into down syndrome. I was crushed. This is my first (and last) baby. So I guess I'm just looking for hope. Any other mamas experience this? Did your babies turn out ok? My dr told me not to worry unless mfm tells me to do so. Not sure how to take that. Haha

Re: 2 soft markers

  • You aren't alone. There is a post about sandal gaps and soft markers lower on the page.
But I am 38 weeks, and was told downs is a small possibility when I deliver. My soft markers are some fluid on the brain and short long bones. They told me this at the start of my 3rd trimester. If you don't do the amino they will just monitor monthly with u/s.
Also if you don't feel comfortable with your mfm don't hesitate to switch. I had one really awful one that basically told me that my baby was going to die (there was nothing to even give an indication of this). The 2nd guy I met with this month was a lot more understanding.
G/l. Hopefully I can give you an update in the next week or so about what the outcome is.

  • We were also told about a cyst on the baby's brain and a calcification on baby's heart at our 20 week US. I am now 29 weeks and as of my last US, both are no longer visible and have gone away on their own. It was really scary to get that info but we tried to not worry because it wouldn't change our decisions about anything. We also decided to not do any further tests looking into it and we're glad we did because it's resolved itself. Good luck and try not to let it get you down. They have to share all findings with you and need several more markets to make that diagnosis.
  • An update on me, even though the fluid resolved itself before birth, little girl has downs. It was pretty evident when looking at her after birth. Best of luck and I just may end up being one of those people who is the small percentage of things( it was a 4 percent possibility).

I would wait and see a MFM. I see one as my regular OBGYN and they really are experts. The nurse always tells me, "Don't worry right now" to which I always respond with, "Then when should I worry?" And she says, "When I tell you to" and, so far, she's been right. You'll be in good hands there. Also, ultrasounds are so subjective! What they see depends on who's performing it, who's reading it, the position of the baby, etc. The same person can take the same measurements three times in a row and get three different measurements every time, it happens to me every time I get an ultrasound.
