Water..

How much do you drink a day? I've been drinking 8 to 10 glasses but am somehow still dehydrated? My doctor told me today that I should be drinking a gallon a day due to increased blood volume. Have any of you been advised the same? If so, how are you managing to consume all of it on a day?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Water..

  • I drink 3-4 liters a day. I have a 1 liter gigantic cup from my last delivery I use.

  • I have a half liter bottle and I fill up what seems like 100 times a day..I know it's not that many but that's how it feels..I always feel thirsty and can't seem to get enough water! Maybe getting a nice water bottle and making sure it has water in it and maybe just sip it every couple of minutes..that has been what has helped me! Just a tip..
  • I've always drank at least a gallon every day - usually closer to two gallons. I'm trying to get at least 2.5 gallons now. Granted, I have a job where I can take bathroom breaks whenever I want.

I switch it up a bit. I will drink regular, filtered water in the morning, vitamin water in the afternoon and flavored seltzer water in the evening. It keeps it interesting and makes me feel like I'm not just drinking water all day.

Also, I drink at least 3 liters a day.

  • I have been unable to drink as much water as I should and as I did before becoming pregnant :( anytime i drink it I become sick so I've been eatting lots of watermelon and carbonated water and whatever I can do to stay hydrated
  • You can also get an app on your phone to help to track how much water you're getting.
  • My doctor actually told me that it is pretty hard for some people to drink the right amount of water, he recommended I drink any fluid that does not have caffeine and it's just as helpful to keep hydrated. Of course water is still better but anything to help is good too
  • I have this cute little 16oz can bottle thing I bought from WalMart and I use it all day everyday with water. I've been such a water drinker since it started getting hot out.

From the moment I held you in my arms, I knew it was meant to be.

    I adore her smile,
    I cherish her hugs,
    I admire her heart.
    But most of all,
I love that she is my daughter.

I vomit every time I drink water. My doctor told me to drink 1 part gaterade or powerade to 1 part water.

I put a straw in my cup and somehow that makes all the difference!
  • I've been using tervis cups because it's easier to track what I drink. Mine are 16 oz so I just try to drink 8 of those, which is equal to a gallon. Lately I haven't been able to do it as well and I definitely have been feeling more dehydrated but at my dr visit last week she said I was fine. I'm thinking I might need to supplement with a little Gatorade or something to get the electrolytes.

  • I have a 20 ounce glass bottle I take to work. I try to fill it up 3 times there. And then unusually let myself drink an iced tea or lemonade to switch it up. I've been letting myself drink a pop every other day or so too because I get headaches and it helps.
At home I aim for at least 3 more bottles of water.
I eat a lot of fruit too so I don't worry.

I was told to aim for at least half my body weight in water a day.

A gallon seems like so much, it makes it sound like an overwhelming order.  I use a 32 oz mason jar.  I just keep it somewhere I'll see all day (kitchen counter, desk etc.).  If I make sure to take a sip every once in awhile, I refill it at least three times a day, soemtimes four, which would be a gallon.  Also, sometimes add a little lemonade or lemon slices, I crave citrus when pregnant.
  • The flavor squeeze bottles are great to change things up a little as well.  Just add a drop or two to your bottle of water.

  • My doctor hasn't ever said the exact amount I should be drinking... Maybe with this being baby #3 he assumes I already know. All I know is I don't drink enough water. I need to start trying to drink more. The flavor squeeze bottles sound like a good idea. So getting some when I go to the store.
  • My doctor tells me the same thing!! I've tried eating more juicy fruits and everything and I'm never hydrated enough! So frustrating

Well I definitely don't drink enough water. I have never been a big drinker. I am lucky if I get down 2 glasses a day :((

Random thought whilst we talk water: during my first pregnancy, the nurse I had always made a comment about how nice and clear my urine was.  It was pathetic and strange how much pride I took in that clear pee.  The OB I'm with this time has made no such comments, we don't talk pee in my appointments.  Makes me a little sad.

Ugh, I have the opposite problem!  I generally haven't been up very long when I go to my appointments, and haven't had a chance to re-hydrate yet (I work until 11 and don't get to bed until after midnight, and my husband wakes me up around 9:20).  Nobody has mentioned it, but I have always been embarrassed by the color of my morning pee samples.  It seems like no matter how much water I drink during the day, I am always dehydrated again the next morning.
  • Try some coconut water too. It's better than Gatorade to rehydrate.
  • I have been so thirsty! I drink about 3 liters a day. Which is kind of annoying. I have to pee all the time anyway and the water means I pee more! Then when I get up in the middle of the night to pee, I am thirsty so I drink more, and the vicious cycle continues!
  • I do a lot of infused waters! Throw some frozen strawberries/raspberries or cucumber in there. Sometimes I do chopped mint.

If I'm lazy I just buy Hint water which is infused and delicious. They have a honeydew flavor that's amazeballs.
  • I love the Camelbak Eddy water bottle -- it has a soft mouthpiece you kinda bite then suck on (if you've ever used a Camelbak for hiking it's the same deal) and for whatever reason I drink sooooo much water that way. The main drawback is that it can be a little awkward to drink from in front of others because it sort of looks like you're nursing from the bottle but that's never stopped me ; )

Some people have major leak issues and I won't say it's NEVER leaked for me but it really hasn't been a huge problem, I just try to nestle it mostly upright in my purse. I travel with it all the time. Maybe wouldn't recommend it for like, tossing haphazardly in a gym bag I guess.

(I actually just am noticing that they make a 1L version, NICE. I have the version that's insulated and while it keeps things really cold it also cuts into the capacity, so would be good to have both!)

I've been finding it helpful to order a large ice coffee on my way to work. The sugary yumminess helps me drink it down pretty quicky, then I keep refilling the container with water all day. For some reason it is really nice to drink out of a straw.
  • Straws are key for me too!
  • Cucumbers are great; I like to cut up a cucumber and a lemon and let it soak for a while to infuse the water. Very good and refreshing. I also like to brew peppermint tea and chill it. Or other teas, as long as they don't have any ingredients that aren't good for pregnancy. I don't always drink as much water as i know I should do those tricks help.
