Acid reflux???

My son is 11 weeks old he is breast fed. He's currently on zantac for acid reflux and I have excluded dairy from my diet in case of a dairy sensitivity ... He still spits up constantly he always has to wear a bib .... And he's extremely gassy and grunts and pushes and stains all night long like he is having difficulty passing gas or bowel movement ... so neither of us get any sleep. Does anyone else have this problem? Is this normal?

Re: Acid reflux???

  • Yes mine LO was on Zantac to it didn't work for him he done the same thing acted like he couldn't pass gas or have a bowl movement but as long as he is having one that's a good sign if you feel the Zantac isn't working ask the doctor about pervacid it worked wonders for mine and unlike Zantac it's giving once a day that will help with his reflux from hurting him but it won't stop spit up it will a bit but not a lot mine went as far as having to take him to a GI doctor and he told me to do a little rice cereal in every bottle for a week it will thicken his bottle and see if that will help with the spit up and let me tell you it's great I actually had to stop breastfeeding because of this

  • Thanks !!! Yea I've noticed giving cereal makes a difference in the spit up....I may have to stop breastfeeding and just pump as well.... My son will go like 24 hours without a bowel movement then totally explode in his diaper and I can tell it causes him discomfort. His bowel movements sound like a full grown man it's crazy to me this doesn't seen normal. And I don't like seeing him in discomfort. Did yours do this as well?
  • Yes mine did my pedi told me to do an oz of water and oz not baby prune juice regular and it didn't really seem to help my baby went three days with out a bowel movement but the water and the prune juice did not help so I just tried the water only about an oz my doctor said that was fine so I just done that and it helped him go now I get one in the morning every day but it took awhile for that to be that why but I would try both and see what works for you if you want
  • Also my doctor says if they don't have a bowel movement in a week he is still fine witch me as a mom don't believe that especially when he was very uncomfortable
  • We've had the same problems. Our LO is just 3 months and still suffering. We took him to a GI and thinks his dose of Zantac needs to be increased so hoping that will help.

We resorted to pear juice since prune did not work for him. Pedi told us to give him 1-2 ounces a day and it definitely helps him pass a daily BM because if he doesn't he will not sleep and be miserable.

Hope things turn around for you... I can totally relate. We are 3 months in and praying for his comfort and our sanity!!
