2-month shots

My LO had his two month shots today and has had a rough afternoon - initially he was just snuggly but soon after developed a fever and is so uncomfortable it's tearing me up. I've been following all the right steps - given him Tempra, ensuring he's eating and consoling him as he sleeps on me ( I also called Telehealth to doublecheck I wasn't missing anything)...I know it's a sign of his body building up immunity but it hurts so much to see him in pain! Anyone else had similar post-vaccination experiences or stories? What have you done?

Re: 2-month shots

  • I gave my LO some baby tylenol. 2ml. He slept and fed for most of that day and the next. By the third day he was back to his usual self.

We just had ours today and it's been awful. My LO has been crying if he's not sleeping and he's normally a happy baby. I have him some Tylenol which seemed to help because he fell asleep right after. I've been letting him sleep on me since I think he needs extra comfort right now. So glad I did this before going back to work.
  • My LO was so stoic for two days. Just general upset but not crying. She returned to her happy self in two days. Hang in there!
  • I second letting them sleep on you for naps. They need extra cuddles!
  • My LO had his shoot the thing to do is to give him 1.25ml of infant Tylenol before his shoot I did this my boy got his shoot cried for a bit until I picked him up and rocked him and he feel right to sleep and I gave him that Tylenol ever 4 hours for that hole day sometimes I went to 6 but by the next day he was great still sleepy but I think giving it before his shoot helped him a lot
  • My LO was just sleepy and snuggly the first day... The second he was quiet/tired but projectile vomited once in the evening... Has been fine since. We were lucky and never got a fever or super cranky. Today (third day) he has been a little cranky but not too bad. I'm thinking of requesting his next shot day off but haven't decided yet... I was still off for this set.

Sounds just like my experience and I am so glad to have been home for this - I can't imagine going to work with him so upset! I agree with you and @TwinCitiesMomma that cuddles and comfort are a must. Both for him and me. Our bedtime routine is off today but his temperature seems to be going down which is good - I just hope it stays that way!

@babystarin - the projectile vomiting sounds frightening but glad to hear he's better today - I'm fortunate to be taking 6 months mat leave so will be off work for the next set too but hope it goes better than this one!

@klcarr - thanks for the encouraging words! I can handle two days so long as my smiley happy boy is back!

@riquelhensom - I hadn't thought to give him any meds before the shots but will look into this for next time. Glad you LO fared them well - I love happy stories!

My LO got his last week and it was okay right after then got home and I couldn't move him with out tears it was so sad, I ended up giving him Tylenol but it's based on weight do ask your dr for the chart. He was better after the mess but was sleepy and fussy for the next two days. It broke my heart seeing him in pain but make sure to rub their legs and move them they will be less sore. One other tip is warm bath and check temp offen! My question is I don't understand why the Drs use such large needles it was a inch and half 18gage and it seems a bit excessive for such small little baby legs :(
I'm glad you LO is doing better im not looking forward to the next set :(
  • Is it normal for baby to sleep more than usual ? She had her shots at her appt. today so I gave her a lift bit of infant Tylenol after her appointment she has been waking up to nurse and for a diaper change but sleeping the rest of the time I-)

Thanks for the tip on rubbing the legs and the warm bath - it's so hard to see them in pain, eh?!

I think the sleeping is perfectly normal - my little guy has been sleeping more often too ( mostly on me or DH for comfort) but I figure it's nature's best way of dealing with illness and building up antibodies. One thing the nurse did caution me about though is to note the level of your LO's alertness when she is awake, especially if there is a fever...
  • Definitely second rubbing the legs - infant Calpol (similar to American Tylenol I think) and a nice long leg massage worked a treat!
  • My LO goes next week for her 2 month shots. Glad everybody has posted a lot of advice so I can know what to do
  • @riquelhensom how much before the doctor appointment did you give the Tylenol?

I'm surprised your doctor used a 18 gauge needle. Ours used 22 gauge. Typically they use between 22-25.

Our little guy was fine for the first 3-4 hours following his shots and quickly fell asleep but then became quite inconsolable until a little while after giving him some baby Tylenol. Then he seemed sleepy for the next couple of days but got back to himself by day 3.
  • Is it normal for them to throw up after every feeding when they have shots?
