Baptism help

We are Catholic and trying to plan our daughter's baptism. The reception afterwards is overwhelming me. Due to the mass times, we will have to host either a lunch or dinner afterwards. I can't see a way around it. Problem is the expense and location. We have 30-40 family that will be attending. Our home is not big enough and it's expensive to feed that many people. Any advice on other options I'm not considering? I need to find a way to make this more manageable.

Re: Baptism help

  • Can you use the church for the reception? That's what my family always did.

As for food - you could say a light lunch will be served. Then do something simple like sandwiches. Or do appetizers and dainties.

We plan on doing a light lunch of make-your-own tuna, chicken, or egg salad sandwiches. For sides we're making pasta salad, potato salad, (possibly coleslaw), and a veggie tray. My parents are taking care of the cake. Nothing will be served warm so it will be super fast and easy to set up once we get home from the church.

Since it will be summer time can you do a more casual BBQ type theme and host it outside? I haven't priced places out yet for ours but I figured we could use this as a back up plan if catering seems to be too much. I don't think people will expect anything to extravagant I mean you did just have a baby!!
  • I agree with kbradley721, a BBQ would be nice, is there a park nearby where you can have a nice picnic?
  • Taco guy? They are always good, cheap and come with everything!

We started planning our daughter's baptism about a month before she was born. We will be hosting 40-50 family members at the end of the month and we are doing deli sandwiches and our parents have offered to make a side for us, which will help A LOT with time and stress. We have to host something afterwards as most of our family is traveling 2+ hours for the baptism and it's the first grandchild on my mother's side (she has 4 siblings). We are also looking into renting/buying a tent and renting chairs and tables so that people have places to sit.
  • Running into the same issue here. We lucked out with my sons because my SIL is a chef so we were able to use her resturant for cost. She changed jobs and her new place is just too far away now :/ I don't want to have it at one of the local pizza/Italian places that has a party room and there's not much else.
  • Maybe try to reserve a community center, the church (as PP suggested) or a spot in a local park if the weather is nice. Make something really inexpensive (BBQ burgers and hot dogs or a big plate of pasta, regular and fruit salad or cut watermelon and garlic bread). If anyone offers to bring anything take them up on it and assign them to bring cake, beverages, plates/napkins, decorations, etc.
  • Lots of fast food restaurants and ethnic food restaurants do catered platters for a good price. (LL Hawaiian, el pollo loco, Chinese or Mexican).

Or do a make your own sandwhich station (buy platters from Costco or deli), and a variety is side salad salads and chips.
  • You can consider just having immediate family and going out to eat after. Or ask close friends/family to help you cook and do it at your house. I know you said your home isn't that large so maybe use that as an excuse to limit the guest list.
