24 hour urine collection

I have to do a 24 hour urine collection on Sunday.  I am not amused.  I am already overwhelmed by all the testing and this is just 11w 1day.  Anyone else doing this? Are there less tests second trimester?

  • I've never even heard of that! What is it for?

I did it at about 35 weeks with my first.
  • It gets a baseline in case you have kidney problems, high proteins, etc later down the line.  I never heard of it either but they said it is standard for high risk pregnancies.  I'm grossed out.  You do it at home.  It involves pee in your fridge and a plastic seat cover on your toilet.
  • I'd suggest purchasing a box of disposal gloves. Whenever I need to give a sample at Dr, I always take a glove out, makes it much easier for me.

  • Thanks for suggestion.  I'm not that grossed out at the Dr office it's something about doing it over and over at home that I find gross.
  • I had to do it 8 times with my last pregnancy (weekly from 32-40 weeks) due to elevated, protein at my 32 week app (+3 dip, 24-hour came back at 1500 mg). It's annoying mainly because your stuck at home (and peeing on a container to store). I did have to do it twice at work since I returned at 38 weeks. For me, I found it easiest to just get a Styrofoam ice chest, fill it with ice, and leave it in the bathroom with the jug in it (leave jug embedded in ice and pour into it). Bonus, no pee in the fridge :) I've done it twice with this pregnancy so far since my 24 week urine dip came back at +2 (24 hour protein was at 1300 mg). I read up on proteinuria and found the renal diet can help. My followup 24-hour urine 1 week later lowered to 400 mg so doc was okay with not repeating and waiting 2 weeks for my next appt. Hopefully your's is just precautionary and you're not stuck doing it weeklym

I didn't want the pee in the fridge so, DH filled a cooler full of ice to keep it in the bathroom.
  • Thanks ladies. I think I'll be buying a cooler tomorrow.
  • I had to do this at 6 weeks and was also not amused :)
