Switching OB in 2nd tri?

Help! I had been seeing an infertility specialist until 10 weeks, at which point he discharged me to my regular OB/GYN. I used to like them for my annual check ups, but I have been so disappointed in their care and rude attitude since I became pregnant. Am I over-reacting? Should I just suck it up? Is it smart to switch doctors now that I'm 15 weeks? Any insight would be seriously appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Switching OB in 2nd tri?

  • I switched 2nd tri with my first (from a general practicioner to an OB) and it was the best decision for me - you want to be comfortable that your doctor is making the right decision for you, especially during the delivery. I ended up with an emergency CS so I was extra glad I switched because the GP couldn't have performed that surgery! I think it is a really easy time in the pregnancy to switch!

  • Switch now. I know people who have switched am weeks before delivery. You want to be comfortable.
    It's not early at all.

If you are unhappy now it's probably not going to get any better. I would go ahead and switch now.
  • I love my OB whom I've had for all 4 pregnancies. However he retires in July so I will see him through my 20 week visit and then have to change OB's within the office. I am really sad, but what can you do. If I didn't like my OB I'd switch and not worry about it. Better now than not have a good delivery. Maybe go do some interviews. And google stalk providers, I always read all the reviews before choosing.

I'll be switching from GP to OB at 30 weeks. The OB here is the only one and she is so busy that she can't take any patients until 30 weeks.
  • I switched at the beginning of 2nd Tri and had no problems! They will ask that you have all your records transferred to your new doctor so that he/she can see your pregnancy history.

  • I just switched yesterday and I'm 15 weeks. I say go for it! I wasn't happy with the first OB. I didn't really feel like she was listening to me. I'm already glad I switched.
  • I switched from an OB to a midwife at 20 weeks with my first. Best decision ever!

  • I'm in the process of switching OBs too! My regular OB/GYN who I've been seeing for 8 years recently stopped doing deliveries, so I knew I'd have to switch sometime during the pregnancy. He saw me through the first tri, genetic screening, and all that jazz...but this week (at 16 weeks) I had my last appointment with him and said goodbye. In 2 weeks I start up with a new doc at a collaborative OB/midwife practice. It's a little sad to part ways with a doctor I've been seeing for so long, but it had to happen. Fingers crossed I get along with the new doc! And I hope the same for all of you!

Switch now, I had concerns early with my last pregnancy by the last three weeks I HATED my OB. You need to be comfortable with your doctor.
  • I just switched at 16 weeks. My old doctor scolded me and raised her voice at me as if I were a child because she didn't think I should have come in when I was having cramping/spotting (even though I have placenta previa and premature separation of the amnion). I didn't want to feel scared that she would scold me again if I needed help or a question answered. Go for it! You need to feel comfortable with your doctor!
  • I am also in the process of switching because my first ob is out of network. I am currently 17 weeks pregnant. It sucks because my appointments will be off but I'm sure it will work out in the end.
  • I switched around 13 weeks, because my insurance changed and the original ob I wanted it accepted it. It wasn't that big of a deal, they transfered all my labs. The place wasn't even bad. Just further, and the other ob was who I was seeing since the beginning ha.
  • I'm in the process of switching too. My insurance changed so the OB and hospital that I used for the first 2 kids will be out of network. I cried, I called the insurance company, they didn't care. So, at 20 weeks, I go in with the new one. My husbands response was," it's not like the other hospital is known for killing babies. ". Sometimes I need to remember perspective. Haha. The point is, you definitely need to feel comfortable but you are doing what your body is meant to do so the main person you need to trust is yourself.
  • Switch!! I switched in the second trimester and was SO thankful I did. My new office had/has great doctors and nurses and it took so much stress away that I didn't even realize I was having about the old doctor.

I'm switching at 20 weeks because my OB is retiring :-< I've been going to her for years and feel extremely comfortable there, but as mentioned what can we do. Asking to hold off her retirement until November might be frowned upon lol! I suggest to switch soon also, you should definitely look forward to all visits instead of dreading the encounter! Hope all works out well!
  • If you are unhappy I agree with every other PP-switch. Sooner is better.
  • I'm thinking about switching as well because I want to deliver close to the nicu which that hospital doesn't have. So my question is for all you ladies that switched how did it effect insurance? I'm scared about that....

I switched at 20 weeks! No regrets!
  • If you're unhappy, then definitely switch. You should be comfortable with your OB.

I am switching for this reason too. My current OB will only deliver at one hospital, and it's very small and doesn't have emergency newborn care. Plus I want to deliver where everyone in both of our families were born.
