Unable to get results from Maternit21?

Good morning! Anyone else have to redo their Maternit21 due to lack of fetal DNA in their blood?? I've waited 2 and half weeks to find out that they just couldn't get a result!! So I have to go in today so they can try again and I'll have to wait another 2 weeks :(

Anyone else ever have to deal with this? I can't say it doesn't concern me that there wasn't enough fetal blood in my blood at 10 weeks. The nurse said I'm part of only 1% of women that this happens to.

Tell me someone else has dealt with this?!!

  • I haven't but my doctor did recommend waiting closer to 11-13 weeks to have the harmony test done so what happened to you wouldn't happen to me. How many weeks/days exactly were you when they drew the blood? I have my next appt at 10w5d.

They could have at least told you what was up a little sooner!!

    I was 10w4d.

I know I don't understand why they didn't just ask me to send them more blood like last week. So they could try to pull from that as well. Instead I have to redo the whole damn thing! Not to mention I have to cancel all appointments today to rush to the docs office to give them my blood before the mail guy leaves at 2pm.

I had it drawn 3 times during my last pregnancy, all 3 times coming back with not enough fetal DNA. At 13 weeks after an ultrasound, where we found concerns we decided to go ahead to have a CVS done. In my situation, the reason for not enough fetal DNA was because of a chromosome issue (trisomy18). I don't want to scare you, but this was my experience.

How far along were you when the first sample was drawn? Hopefully since it's a re-draw the lab will put your sample in rush status. My counselor kept calling the lab to pester them to move the results along - we got the second and third draw "results" within a week. I know my doctor likes to wait a week after they say that they're able to take the draw for a better result. I'm hoping this is the case for you.
  • I'll ask her if they can rush it this time. I'm hoping it's because I'm overweight. After googling just now, I see that this has happened to a few plus size women. My BMI is 31. I'm size 16. I'm going to try to stay positive about it.

@Cnrwife Did you have the NT scan too? If so, Did that come up normal or did that show possible abnormalities?

  • That's really interesting, but along with what a PP said, I was told to wait until after 12 weeks to ensure there's enough. So hopefully it was just a little early.
  • Ugh, I'm so sorry you had to wait so long only to get no result! That is beyond frustrating. I would ask them to "rush" it and pester your genetic counselor so she can pester the company.

    How did your Nuchal go?
  • CnrwifeCnrwife member
Yes, from the start the baby was measuring about a week behind. At the NT scan (was done at 12 and some days) the NT measurement was at a 3.4, which is what made us take the risk factor and do the CVS.

    Definitely stay positive!
  • My NT scan on Tuesday went great. Everything measured normal.

I will definitely have them pester the lab! Thanks :)

You definitely have that on your side :)

Thank you for being honest with me. I will stay positive!! Thank you again for sharing your experience.

  • That's great, NT's are pretty accurate. I wouldn't worry at all, I would just be really irritated!

So not me, but  my best friend is going through this... she had her NT scan and draw for the Panorama at about 12-13 weeks... the scan gave her a high measure of 3.8mm and an absent nasal bone.

They also told her yesterday, after almost 2 weeks after the draw, that there "wasn't enough blood" ... but I guess they must have meant not enough fetal DNA?

Not trying to thread hijack but I feel awful for her. Eek!

Sounds like you should have a good outcome though with the good NT scan results. What a pain though.

  • And honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the lab did something to accidentally compromise your sample so they just said there wasn't enough fetal DNA. But I'm a bit of a skeptic!

I'm so sorry your friend is going through that. With that NT result, I'd be as supportive as you can to her through this time. Does she have a good support system. I bet she's freaking out..? I'm so sorry.

Yes I do think I will have a good outcome!! I'm totally frustrated though! My in laws and all my family have been calling me everyday this week waiting to hear results. Next time I won't tell anybody about this test until I have results in my hand...I've learned my lesson!

@marchmellow2 - yeah, she has her family and husband that are great...unfortunately, I live across the country from her but am trying to be there as much as I can. It's tough - and it's going to be even tougher to navigate the waters IF something (God forbid) is wrong and I continue on with another healthy pregnancy.... life is hard, yo!

Hahah yes, kind of like towards the end when EVERYONE is always texting, calling, etc to find out if you're in labor yet. The worst.

Oh I haven't experienced that towards the end yet since DS was 6 weeks preterm. I'd be really annoyed and just stop answering the phone lol.

I'll be sending your friend lots of positive thoughts and prayers! Prayers for you too since that will be hard to navigate how to respond to her when you're doing so well... I'm so sorry :(

Thanks girl! Prayers to you that you get your results asap so you can rest easy! :)
  • @DH09072012 There's always hope. Docs told my mom that my brother was going to be born without a spine/ skull and he turned out fine!

I'm trying to keep hope @vegdumpling and trying to remind her that things can potentially all still turn out ok. Thanks for the positive story!
  • I haven't read all the posts so sorry if I'm responding in duplicate. But, my doc said that is exactly why the MFM clinic he sends his patients to doesn't perform the test until 12 weeks. The window is technically 10-14 weeks but they like to avoid this potential issue :( It totally sucks but I wouldn't be TOO concerned since you were at the early end of the time period. It's absolutely frustrating and totally a waste of time and patience. I'll keep my fingers crossed everything goes well for you this time!
  • Someone please tell me they don't bill for multiple redraws on this test. Because holy moly, I could see that adding up, especially if insurance doesn't cover it.

No they definitely don't double bill.

In my case I had the Panorama test at the same point as you @Marchmellow2 and they took a swab of dh's cheek dna as well. Doc said sometimes there's not a lot of fetal dna in mom's blood at 10 wks, she indicated that it was pretty common. Have no idea if my blood had enough either, guess ill find out in another week or so.

But you try your best not to worry!!!

I was told by my genetic counselor yesterday that is the reason they draw 2 vials - they start with the first, try to take out the 10% needed, and only go to the second vial if they don't get that 10% fetal DNA. But it extends the time in that case (closer to the 10 business days then 6 or 7) because typically they only need to test the first vial. I hope that made sense?? I think that would be why they didn't call you for a redraw last week.

Best wishes though! I'm in my 2 week wait now too... Blood drawn yesterday!
