Pumpin Rec.

Just got in touch with my health insurance and they gave me a list of pumps I can order. I have no idea what to get. Anyone have/get one of these? Can you make a suggestion?

Medela pump in style
Ameda purely yours
Tomy quiet expressions
Spectra 2 hospital strength
Freebie deluxe set
Natures Bond

I'm clueless.

Re: Pumpin Rec.

  • My best friend is a lactation consultant and she recommended the Ameda Purely Yours, which is what I got. I haven't had the chance to use it yet, though! I've also heard good things about the Medela Pump In Style, and she is going to let me borrow her old (but cleaned and well-maintained!) one if I decide I don't like the Ameda.

  • I've heard Medela Pump in Style all the way, from everyone I've talked to. Also, the lady who taught my bread feeding class who is a lactation consultant/nurse said that was one of the best in her opinion. But, I have no experience myself. And they also sell all the things for Medela pumps in stores around here and not much else, so it may be an area thing as well.
  • The Ameda is the one I used last time. Great customer service too! It fits Medela bottles. It's quiet which is nice cause I would pump in the middle if the night and not wake my husband. I would nurse from one side and pump the other side at the same time.
  • I'm getting the medela, but like @corndogrobot mentioned- it's not quiet. It sounds likes a cow mooing, which is actually very fitting!
  • If those are your options, you should do some research and find out what is important to you and how those fit into your needs. For example, if you are going back to work, then will you want something easily portable? Quiet? Do you want a closed or open system? ( I would recommend closed), do you want battery, cord or both power options? Do you want one with different flange options? Are you going to be a SAHM? Do you just need a manual one for occasional use?

Recommendations are great, but you have to look at what you are going to use it for and then look at reviews.   Personally, I look at negative reviews first (on the ones that meet my criteria) and go from there.  I feel like you get to know the potential problems and if they are something you are willing to work with.

Oh gosh! That's a lot to think about! I do not know much about breast pumps, but I have the Baby Bargains book and a breast feeding book, so I will read up. I am taking a year off of work so I will be a sahm for 14 months. No need for something quiet. Thanks for giving me some insight on what to question.
  • I have the medela in style... love it! I didn't get it until baby was like 4 months last time because I was saving up for it and didn't need to pump much, just needed a little stash for evenings out, emergencies etc. Looking forward to building up a bigger freezer stash this time. I had the hand pump by medela in the beginning, forget what it's called..think it was like 45bucks.

I like having both this time around. The electric pump is definitely more efficient but the hand pump is nice on the go and they both use the same bottles and flanges.

  • I am a ftm but ordered the spectra s2 because it is hospital grade and a closed system. It was between that and the Medela Pisa and from the reviews (so.many.reviews) the spectra won me over.

@lizh62288 I agree. After doing some research, I feel that the Spectra 2 is the way to go.
  • I used my medala pump in style literally every day (from the day we got home from the hospital) until my son was one year old, and never had a problem with it! I just got it out and sterilized and it's like brand new. I'd recommend it.
  • I'm getting the medela!! I have a few friends that have used them and comes highly recommended from my doctor! If you can get it covered that's amazing! I had to pay just under 500$ for mine!! Will be so worth it though for pumping while working ect!!
  • My insurance covers the medela and the specta. I researched both and like the fact that the spectra is a closed system and that its quieter. I'm going to be pumping at work and really want something quiet.

I used a manual Avent pump with my first 2 babies so anything is better than that

I have the Ameda through insurance but as a FTM I haven't used it yet
  • Just an FYI, groupon has some of these pumps at discounted prices!! Insurance is covering the cost of one and I am buying another one so I can keep it at work and am not hauling it back and forth all the time.

  • Just a warning, the Ameda Purely Yours was recommended highly for years because of its affordability compared to the Pump In Style. Unfortunately, the manufacturer made changes within the last year and a half or two years and there have been A LOT of complaints about the PY.

I needed to pump exclusively for my DS for the first 12 weeks and I used a Medela Purely Yours.

  • Since we are on the subject, if you have insurance through your employer, under the affordable care act, they are supposed to supply you with a breast pump for free...

Don't buy one if you don't have to.
  • FTM here, I'm planning to breast feed my baby and I will be home for more than a half year, bought manual Avent breast pump only to pump occasionally so daddy also can feed baby and in case I go out for dinner or something. I red reviews and it sounded very good, but at the same time it won't be big deal if it doesn't work for me.

Unfortunately there are plans that are "grandfathered" and therefore an exception and aren't required to. We were on one until January....

I like baby gear lab's reviews. They suggest the Spectra and then the Medela. I just got the Medela from my insurance because they didn't offer the Spectra, but if hey had, I'd have gone for that.

I stayed home and exclusively breastfed for more than a year as well. You might consider getting a reliable pump for your own peace of mind. My husband wanted to do date nights and I was never able to leave the baby because she didn't take bottles. i felt so guilty not being able to be with him! Eventually I just figured, If she was hungry- she'd eat! Just a heads up, If you want a minute of freedom you will need a good pump to get bottles for baby. I don't know anything about the one you mentioned but it's worth looking into. Good luck. Breast feeding was such a great experience!
  • You'll also want a pump for when your milk comes in - I was in tears needed to relieve the pressure, it was quite intense. Also, if you get a plugged duct, frequent feeding and pumping helps it pass. I got them most often when my son was weaning.

Don't waste time with a manual pump. Seriously, we live in the future. You have enough to worry about and needing two hands to pump one side shouldn't be one of them. Make life easier for yourself and go electric!

Actually I red hundreds of revews that with this pump you can get more milk in shorter period of time (comparing with electric double pump)

Maybe the make them differently now. My electric came with a manual and it was a joke. Do what works for you! Glad to hear they have improved!

It's not just employer insurance plans- if you buy insurance through the healthcare exchange your pump should also be coveredcovered with no co-pay. Some plans are better than others though- some will cover a electric pump, others may only cover manual but regardless definitely still worth calling your insurance company to find out! Also lactation consultants also need to be covered so if you're having trouble breastfeeding keep that in mind as well.

As for pumps, I got the Medela In Style- covered in full by my employer sponsored health insurance plan.
