Gestational Diabetes....Anyone?

Second time Mom! No issues with my 4y/o however baby brother has been a bit more trouble. I have been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, I am looking for meal plans or really any advice!

Thank you in advance

Re: Gestational Diabetes....Anyone?

  • Ftm here with GD. I know the diagnosis is scary at first, but I promise it's not so bad! Pintrest has great meal ideas, I don't do anything fancy, just stay under 45 carbs a meal and 15 a snack. Test out a few different foods and see what works for you. I had to give up pasta but can still have thin crust pizza! Usually you'll get to have an extra ultrasound now so that's a plus! Good luck momma!

  • I also didn't have GD with my first, but do have it this time. I've found that it's all trial and error. Peoples bodies react different to certain foods/drinks. My biggest issue was my fasting number. i couldn't keep it low no matter what I ate the night before. My 1hr after dinner would be good, but after my PM snack, my fasting number would be high. Another mom suggested Breyer's vanilla ice cream! Sounds crazy.. I have 1/2 cup of ice-cream with 1 tbs of peanut butter for my pm snack at 10pm. My numbers are ALWAYS between 83-88 in the morning, which is great!

I have GD this as well as when I had ds1. It's not to bad, mainly exchanging one thing for amother. I had to have another ultrasound last time due to it, but baby was measuring big to begin with (DH is a big guy, baby was too when born)

  • GD since week 9, I'm 25w5d today. Best advice is with every meal/snack make sure you have a good source of protein. That regulates how the sugar is processed and helps keep a more stable level. Also keeping to a good eating schedule is important. My GD doc told me avoid milk in the morning, it spikes your sugar because for some reason it's harder for pregnant women to process in the am.

I had GD with my first and again with this pregnancy. It is a lot of trail and error, I'm definitely struggling a bit more this time as I get farther along. I agree Pinterest has a lot of great meal and snack ideas. Try and take a walk or get some sort of light exercise after eating, it really seems to help.

2nd time mommy here and I had gestational diabetes with my son, and now I have to take a 3hour glucose to determine if its the same with my second pregnancy. Ive recently started changing what I eat as I did with my first. So today I had:
*breakfast-whole grain cereal w/lowfat milk *lunch-apple slices w/peanut butter and I also had half of a turkey & ham sandwich on whole grain bread and about 6 cherries.
*dinner- 1.25 cup of Hamburger helper and a slice of whole wheat bread
{I love bread cant you tell lol} Throughout the day I snacked on dry cheerios, a few pretzels. And of course 8+ glasses of water. I was pretty satisfied. It helps to keep fresh fruit and veggies handy and smoothies are awesome!! I know I wont be perfect because I'll have my cravings, but Im definitley gonna try my best to make better decisions in my food choices. Don't get discouraged or saddened by gestational diabetes. Everything is gonna be fine. Good Luck.
**also try to fit in at least 30 minutes of exercise. (Walking)

I failed my 1 hour test today so having to go back to do the 3 hour test. I'm going to make some adjustments to my diet and start exercising again. Any suggestions on meal plans??
  • Have you ladies been to classes that your hospital requires? They give tons of menu ideas! With a few minor changes here and there...it shouldn't be too bad! Feeling better now about it after a couple days...just a lil discouraging getting that first phone call!
  • I just failed my 1 hr GD test and have to go in for my 3 hr next week. I'm not really surprised though: my mom, grandma, and aunt all had GD and my dad has type 2, so I'm pretty much screwed by genetics. Not sure what I'm going to do if I fail this test since my stomach instantly evicts vegetables.

I was just diagnosed with GD two days ago and meet with the nutritionist next week. I didn't have it with my first 8 years ago and am feeling shocked and upset. I feel like I've already been so strict with my diet, avoiding all the risky foods during pregnancy, that now I just feel like the next 13 weeks are going to be miserable. My appetite really started to increase about a month ago and I've been craving pasta and ice cream like crazy! Not just eating just that, of course, but definitely indulging. Now I'm grieving the loss of ice cream and everything else I love to eat and trying to get used to pricking my fingers four times a day with that darn thing (and feeling hungry.)

I'm sure I'll get used to it and the food restrictions, but this has been a hugely stressful week for other reasons (hubby is suddenly out of a job, losing health insurance and both of our cars next week) so I think that's probably affecting how well I'm dealing with this new revelation. I know I'll get through it, though!
  • I'm going this morning for the the 1hour test...wish me luck!
  • I was diagnosed last week and already know that I will have to go on meds. If I eat a piece of fruit or wheat bread or any carb at all my blood sugar spikes and my fasting glucose is high as well. I was depressed but it's really out of my control at this point so lll just roll with it.

@nickc2cute what meds did they put you on?
  • None yet but I know I will need them. I see the specialist tomorrow.
  • Glad to read so many managing this. 4th baby on the way and first time diagnosed with GD. Tomorrow is my appointment with the specialist to learn more about what to do etc.
  • Have had gd since 9th week, about to hit week 27.! It is hard. I will not lie, but it will get better. I get to have ice cream every now and then. But it's all about figuring out what works for your body and adding some exercise to your life.
My best advice is to NOT completely drop your carbs, but to find the balance with them. If you do, and then cave and eat a small amount of them, it will give you such a spike, and you will feel like a bad mom for hours if not days.
Fiber is your friend. Want pasta? Eat a salad equal to or greater than the amount of pasta, and you'll probably be good. (Again, nobody's body is the exact same)
The meds are there to help. Do not feel bad if you end up on them. I have to shoot insulin every night. I tried really really hard to do it by diet alone, and it just wasn't working. I'm now doing great and my baby girl is right on track, plus I haven't gained anything... So that's a small victory for post preggo life.
  • I got my insulin prescription today. The whole thing is a little overwhelming but if it helps then I'm gonna do the best I can. At 32 weeks I have to start seeing the specialist 2 times a week. With all these appointments I don't know when I will work.
  • Im 24w5d this my first baby and I found out at 8weeks that I have gd. I controlled it for about 8weeks then needed glybride its a pill. Well I was just told that I will need insulin shots because my fasting won't go any lower :(. Good luck to you!
  • I have my test on the 10th. Not looking forward to it.
  • I just found out yesterday that I have it and see a specialist on Friday to learn more about it. I was pretty devestated when I found out but know that seeing a dietician will be a huge help now and after baby is born. Gotta stay positive and do what's best for the babe!
  • Just got the message that I passed the 1 hour and don't need to take the 3 hour! Woo hoo!
  • I found out today at my appointment that my doctor does a total of 3 glucose tests! I did my first at 8 weeks, I'll do another between 26-28 weeks and then again between 34-36 weeks. He said he's the only doctor in town who does more than 1. (unless you fail of course) Lucky me. lol. I'm glad he's thorough, I've just never heard of this before. Fingers crossed I pass the next 2.
  • I go on Monday for my 3 hr. I am very nervous after failing my 1 hr.
  • I failed my 1 hour test so on Monday I take the three hour test, ugh.

  • I failed my 1 hr test last Friday. I had to go back yesterday for a 2 hour test. Haven't heard the results yet. I'm scared and nervous. But apparently my fasting levels were normal and I'm just hoping I failed the first one because I had breakfast that day! Fingers crossed! :(
