Hyperemesis!!!

hello, I tried to search for topics on this, but there really isn't anything.. Is anyone else dealing with this? I can't even get up out of bed let alone go to work or leave my house. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you!!!

Re: Hyperemesis!!!

  • Hyperemisis usually has to be treated by a Dr. Watch your hydration closely cause you may need IV fluids.

  • I saw a doctor yesterday for this. They tested my urine, and I was very dehydrated. I was then sent to the hospital and received 2 liters of fluid and some medication for when I'm feeling really sick. I would check with your doctor today.
  • I spent 7 hours in the ER last night for the same thing. This baby is putting me through the ringer already and I'm only 7 weeks. Two bolus of iv fluid and some reglan later I finally felt a little better.
  • My friend has this. She's 3 weeks from her due date now, but in the first few weeks she was hospitalized for dehydration and missed a ton of work. Her doctor prescribed her Zofran, which helped her somewhat, but she's since stopped taking it about 2 months ago due to the birth defect claims. She says she feels better now, but not totally. Still nauseous but doesn't puke anymore.

So sorry you're going through this! I've been getting waves of nausea but no barfing yet. I hate the feeling so I can't imagine.
  • This is my life right now. I went to the ER for fluids last week and they gave me meds. I feel so guilty taking them, but I need to feel somewhat human to take care of my other kids. I'm hoping beyond hope that it starts tapering off soon, but every day that I'm all, "Oh goody, I've only barfed once today!" the next day is intolerable.
  • Thank you everyone for your answers!! I was in the er last week due to dehydration... It's terrible isn't it? So difficult to enjoy anything at all. Does anyone have any advice about eating anything specific? Either I'm throwing up, or if I can eat I have terrible acid reflux.

    Thank you!!!
  • All you can do is try and try different things that sound good until something clicks. I have yet to find that one thing that makes feel better.
  • I lost 3 pregnancies due to Hyperemesis... malnutrition and dehydration is horrible. This is my 5th pregnancy and have 1 living child (who was born perfectly normal). I took Zofran my entire pregnancy with him, then the claims that it can cause birth defects made it so that no one would prescribe the ONLY thing that could help me. Now, 8 weeks pregnant, my team of 7 high risk OB's gave me Zofran. My choice is to risk the slight possibility of a birth defect, or losing another child from malnutrition.

I'm the same way!! I am sick almost all the time, strangely enough I can keep down greasy fast food but almost nothing else which is awful.
  • I'm not really sure if I'd be categorized as having HG, but I keep having days where I literally can't keep anything down & will even dry heave if I have nothing to throw up....I haven't felt like this since I had food poisoning a few years back (except that goes away!!).  I will have a few days like that then a few days where I only throw up a few times, and can eat a meal or two, it keeps going back and forth.  I had to call out for the 1st time yesterday.

I've done a lot of searching on the topic.  The only thing I can say is try EVERYTHING and ANYTHING you think will work.  Best article I read said 1st trimester is all about survival.

Few of my personal fav suggestions:

    1. Gatorade/Pedialyte
    2. Lemons (?? it kinda works for more mild bouts--just smelling them or licking them)
    3. Trying heavier foods...creamy soups...potatoes.... proteins
    4. Eating very small amounts at a time
    5. Nibbling right before bed (i did ritz crackers and peanut butter, just a few)
    6. Special K protein shakes (small sips throughout day)
    7. Having dryer sheets or mint/lemon scented things around

Nothing ginger or peppermint worked for me.... and eating fruits/veggies is out of the question

Just remember to try anything, eat anything you think will work.  If you can keep gatorade and french fries down, at least it'll keep ya out of the hospital another day!

    Good luck ladies!!!!!!!
  • I had it with my first pregnancy, started at 3 weeks and it was terrible. In the hospital all the time for dehydration. Couldnt get out of bed or go to work. I finally got on Zofran at 12 weeks and it really helped. I was able to get up and work. My son if fine, no birth defects at all. I'm 6 weeks now and just getting a touch of nausea everyday. If it gets bad like last time I will definitely ask for the Zofran again. Good luck I know it sucks but gets better :)
  • Thank god, I haven't found anyone else suffering from this. It's bloody awful. I'm so unwell. Not being able to work is the worst part... My partner and I had hoped to have two incomes for a lot longer than we have :(
Really, really sucks. But it'll all be okay if my bub stays safe and happy!
  • So sorry you ladies are going through this too!

I was at hospital 2x last week to be put on an iv. Not fun. I'm totally not a glowing pregnant woman lol. I've been taking diclegis now and have zofran if I need it. I'm really scared about the zofran. I took it all the time with my first pregnancy and my 4yr old daughter is perfect. Anyone else nervous about taking it? How do you find peace about it? I struggle with it daily when I'm at the point where I haven't kept anything down and I'm like, "ok taking this and being able to eat and drink HAS to be better for us than not!"

I had HG with DS.  I took Zofran nearly the whole time and he's very healthy and smart as a whip.  The FDA is still researching possible links to birth defects.  If it were really an issue, they would've told doctors to stop prescribing it to pregnant women and warned pharmacists not to fill it, which they have not.  According to FDA stats, it has been prescribed to over 250,000 pregnant women over the past decade and a half.  If it really DID cause all of these horrible defects, don't you think it would be VERY clear by now?
