Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC Shopping

So we're all here because we are TTC. Have any of you gone ahead and purchased things for your future baby? Would there be things you would want to wait specifically until you got your BFP, to buy?

I think I've mentioned before that books are my current weak spot.

Re: TTC Shopping

  • I'm going to wait but i would love to get the "What to expect" books again.I really enjoyed those the first time around and helped me a lot.

I bought one onesie. It was on clearance and super cute. I just couldn't pass it up. I hung it in the future nursery closet and it looks so sad by itself in there but I'm not going to get anything else. I'm worried I'll jinx it

  • If i came across a cute Panda Onesie i may not be able to pass it up XD I love pandas and it would be gender neutral so wouldn't matter much XD

  • I haven't bought anything yet, but I have a few super cute hand me down outfits from my little cousin. But my husband has bought a onesie, and several outfits for both a girl and a boy in his favorite NFL team. So sweet, lol!

I've resisted the urge so far, but I love elephants and that's all over the baby stuff right now. Strolled through the baby aisle in Target yesterday and had to make myself put it back. Just making mental notes for now...

  • I'm thinking about buying a Star Wars onesie, so I can use that as my reveal to DH. I've also done some Etsy shopping for cards and cute ways to announce to our family. I haven't purchased anything yet though.

I do have a box of favorite toys we have saved from our childhoods marked PFO (Potential Future Offspring).

DH is a firefighter and I saw a super cute onesie with a firetruck on it and really had to resist the urge to buy it -- don't want to jinx anything.

We did recently give away our guest bed, so the room that will eventually be the nursery is sitting there, empty.  My mind is already going nuts on how I would decorate it, but I have to stop myself...no jinxing!!!

  • DH and I bought a 2-pack of pacifiers...but not for future baby. We bought them as a way to tell our parents we're pregnant when that time comes.  We have discussed starting to buy diapers and wipes if we see them on sale to stock up on for when we need them, since we know we'll need LOTS some day.

  • I have allowed myself one onesie, because i will use it to tell DH when I get my BFP. He is a big gamer and the onesie says "Player 3 has entered the game," with a little Xbox controller on it. I couldn't resist.

@concreteayngel omg I love that idea!! My husband is a major gamer too!

  • I've started a mini library of children's books, and will pick a new one up here and there. I also have a small chest filled with toys. I justify this by saying they're really for my niece and nephew when they come over to play....but in my head when I pick new toys/books out...I'm really imagining my own kiddos!
  • I just bought the milestone blocks.  I justified this by telling myself I could use them to document # of weeks pregnant, but I am pretty sure I've jumped the gun by alot.

That is adorable! My husband is a huge gamer, he'd totally love that as well. Great idea!

As far as me..I'm horrible. I have quite a few outfits for baby girl or baby boy. Hoping I'm not jinxing myself but more so preparing for baby. Pastor says if you want a baby, set another plate at the dinner table! Lol. Praying it'll happen when it's right!

Lolol I've justified some of my purchases (who am I kidding...all of them) by saying that if I don't get pregnant soon or if it's for the opposite sex of what we end up having..I'll just give everything to my friend who's actuallyyyyy pregnant with a girl right now Lol.

Thankfully my husband is fully onboard with my craziness lol

I've just bought books, but ALL the books.  Books on TTC, books on pregnancy, books on parenting, books on how crazy hard it is to be a full time worker and a mom.  All. the. books.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • @concreteayngel thanks! :)

  • @juliebeannn  Our guest bedroom is sitting empty now too. I just keep imagining what it will look like as a nursery. I really want to go ahead and buy furniture for it but A) I don't want to jinx myself B) Don't want to explain that to my mother (who doesn't know we are TTC) if she comes by before I actually get a BFP.

I've been trying to resist!  We purchased one book, but we have been talking names FOREVER and i've been looking at strollers.  Going to hold off on actually buying or creating a registry till that BFP!!!

We have 2 onesies. One I bought for a baby shower gift for a friend but by the time I saw her, the baby had outgrown it, and the other I got the other day to give to DH when I do (eventually, hopefully) get a bfp. DH has an entire hot wheels collection and some are put away as "collectibles" and others are put away for future children. He also bought a radio flyer tricycle for a future child. I wanted to buy it for my nephew, but he said no way, were keeping it, it's too cool not to! So I bought 2 lol! I think he's having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that I will not pop out a toddler, but he's having fun at least.
  • My old employer gave me handy downs from her daughter of just super cute things. Plus I have a ton of toys (with the fact me and DH are big kids at heart and we have a niece) and books.

But I so bought some binkies that I was going to use last year to tell my MIL we were pregnant but DH didn't wanna take the attention away from SIL (we were there for her wedding, and she is a big spoiled brat) plus he wants to keep the binkies for when we have a LO

Is "handy downs" a saying where you come from? Sounds cute.

  • I was also one of those that couldn't pass up a cute outfit (or two) when shopping for a baby shower, with the justification of somehow using it to tell hubby. We both have toys and books set aside, but we've had those forever. There may be a private Pinterest board and private Amazon wish list, some free samples in a drawer, that kind of thing. I like to be prepared.

We also had planned to tear up old carpet and re-paint the guest room last summer. It took me a long time to get the bed back in there.

  • I have a couple books and toys. I justify it as we have something for my nieces and nephew when they come over.

H will just buy a toy because he thinks I'd like it. Thats how we have a skip hip owl pull along toy.

I'm waiting until we get a BFP and see a heartbeat before buying ALL the things. I do have a onesie that says "Mommy's little peanut" since that's what we call our (at this point) hypothetical baby. DH insisted and I couldn't say no :)

Not everyone here is TTC-- FYI.

No. I don't buy anything before 24 weeks. Nothing is more painful than having to put away baby items after a miscarriage.

  • Right before my mc I made a Xmas ornament I was going to use to tell my mom (we would have had Xmas baby) And a indie I used to tell DH for DS to wear threw them away. I won't buy or make anything for the next baby till after my first U/S this time! Mostly cause I don't want to see it around glaring at me if I mc again!
  • I have a few items, but I try not to buy too many things because I know I'll go crazy lol. I LOVE baby clothes!.... We chose to wait until after we know we're at a safe point in the pregnancy to start baby shopping.

  • I debated whether to post this, because I hate to be a downer, but I agree with @PrimRoseMama. All I bought when I was pregnant was What to Expect and a pregnancy journal. But after the miscarriage, those items plus library books, preggie pops, gingerale and pregnancy foods were really upsetting. It is possible that the things you buy could end up being a painful memory if you miscarry. That may change when you get pregnant again, but it's hard to know in advance.

Do what you feel comfortable with, but I thought I'd throw out that warning. I was glad I hadn't bought more than what I actually needed at the time.

On a sidenote, @PrimRoseMama said not everyone on this board is TTC, but it's the "Trying to Get Pregnant" board. I'm confused about that.

  • I think that's maybe why I feel the need to buy all this baby stuff (read bag full of clothing). When pregnant I didn't buy as much as a book for fear that I'd jinx myself. I also didn't tell anyone. After my miscarriage I was devastated and frankly I didn't feel any better about not having any baby things. It didn't make me feel grief any less and frankly I feel like I wasted 9 weeks not enjoying my pregnancy.

After 11 months with no baby in sight I think buying baby things is finally my way of thinking positive and not giving any fucks about jinxing myself or feeling crazy. If it makes me happy I'm going to do it and if it doesn't I won't. That and DH is fine with it, I think If it upset him I wouldn't. Perhaps if I start dressing our cats in said baby clothes I might need to check back in.

Also it's true not everyone here is TTC. I'm currently on the bench and some ladies are CFNBC (child free not by choice) etc

We have bought a few things here and there. These things are in H man cave and will go in the nursery when we get the BFP. Lamp, pictures, and a old leather football etc. H has already said, "there will be no pink or blue. There will only be burnt orange, black, and grey in this nursery". He is a huge Longhorns fan. I didn't have it in me to argue or tell him no at the time but we shall see.
