we love this name if it's a boy, but my DH and I prOnounce it differently because of where we are from. He says it more like aaaii-sher (Long Island) and I say it more like aah-Sher (nj). We are keeping the names a secret so I don't know how it sounds when other people pronounce it, and cannot decide if this will drive me insane and cause name regret.

Anyone have feedback frOm experience??

Yah he gives that a long a. It's so hard to spell out how he says it lol it's like aiyyysh. His whole side will pronounce it like that and I just can't decide if that's a deal breaker. Everyone has different accents, I just don't want my kid to be confused!

I agree with pp, the short a is how people will say it. No one has mispronounced our three year olds name yet.

Sounds like you have a deal breaker on your hands. Sorry, but your husband's Long Island pronunciation is horrendous. And, if the rest of his family will be pronouncing it the same way then I'd toss it and choose another name. That kind of thing would drive me crazy. As much as you try to correct people, it won't stick. People don't change, especially when it comes to their speech patterns (unless they undergo speech pathology). I guarantee they won't be able to hear the difference either (i.e. because most people with colloquial accents can't hear it). Good luck.

We have an Asa, and to me it has the same "feel" and maybe easier to pronounce for him. We have only recieved postive feedback on his name.

^Nailed it. That kind of thing would drive me crazy as well. We have a Jasper, so of course I like that suggestion

I think the previous suggestion of Asa works... the question here is, will he (and his L.I. family) pronounce this correctly? Or should we just stay away from A names?

Basically, if I were you I'd choose a different Biblical name (to get the same feel as Asher) with an easier pronunciation for your husband and his family. Best of luck!
