Choroid Plexus Cysts found on 18 Week Ultrasound w/ no other abnormalities, anyone? Need advice.

Has anyone else had this yet?  I went in today for a happy 18 week ultrasound and then I was told that my son has two choroid plexus cysts found in his brain. I now have an appointment scheduled with a Maternal Fetal Specialist for next Wednesday.  I had the harmony test done when I was 10 weeks pregnant and it came back that everything was normal, no chromosomal defects. I really don't even understand what it is, but I'm super stressed and sad bc it is something that didn't come back perfect.

  • I believe there was a post about this the other day.  Try searching "cysts" on the right...you'll see that most went away on their own.  Try not to worry too much.  Hang in there.

  • I just found a study and here is a little bit of info:

A choroid plexus cyst is not considered a structural or functional brain abnormality. Most choroid plexus cysts are isolated and occur in otherwise low-risk pregnancies.2 The only association of some significance between an isolated choroid plexus cyst and a possible fetal problem is with trisomy 18. Choroid plexus cysts are present in 30% to 50% of fetuses with trisomy 18. Trisomy 18 is characterized by major structural abnormalities and abnormal sonographic findings.3 When a fetus is affected by trisomy 18, multiple structural anomalies are almost always evident, including structural heart defects, clenched hands, talipes deformity of the feet, growth restriction, and polyhydramnios. When a structural anomaly is present in addition to choroid plexus cysts, the probability of trisomy 18 is 37%.4

In the absence of associated sonographic abnormalities, the likelihood of trisomy 18 is extremely low in otherwise low-risk pregnancies.

If they didn't find any other abnormalities, little one is most likely going to be just fine. Especially reassuring, is the low risk results from the genetic testing/Harmony. If Trisomy 18 were present, the test would have raised your odds. Chances are these cysts will resolve on their own and are not of concern. But trust me I understand that it is impossible not to worry. Thoughts and prayers for you and your little one. My money is on a perfectly healthy little baby joining you in October. Hugs

These cysts are different than the ones from the other day, but you are still right that they should resolve themselves :)

  • My baby had choroid plexus cysts, with no other abnormalities on the US, and my blood work came back with no risk of chromosomal abnormalities. 2 weeks later I saw a maternity fetal specialist just to be sure, and everything was fine. The cysts were completely gone.
Good luck! I am sure everything is perfectly fine :)

This is actually what my hubby and I heard about our sweet baby girl as well. We did not do genetic testing so my doctor is having me do a follow up ultrasound with a perinatal specialist tomorrow ... My doctor said it's NOTHING to worry about AT ALL when other abnormalities are NOT found and that she is 100% NOT worried about it at all but needs me to get the ultrasound since I didn't do genetic testing... It's VERY common (1 out of every 50-100 babies) that these are found on babies nowadays because the technology is SO much more advanced (even articles online say that that's the main reason they find them now---imagine how many whole and healthy people had these as fetuses that went unnoticed because of low-grade ultrasound technology probably even 20 years ago!) ... If you look it up online I believe it's WebMD says choroid plexus cysts are like considered the severity of a blister and are NOT indicators for any brain abnormalities whatsoever. Also majority of the time they resolve themselves and go away but my doctor said even if they didn't pediatrician don't even follow up with them because they aren't a big deal... I'm believing God has already healed our baby and when we go tomorrow she is whole and healthy !!! I'm excited to do an in depth ultrasound and I'm excited to get another chance to see her again! :) (not everyone gets the chance to see their baby again so soon) Hope this brings you some reassurance and peace of mind !! I will be praying for you and your baby and I'm sure everything will be okay !! ❤️❤️❤️
  • Hi my twins have 2x CP cysts each. They are sooooo common and part or normal brain development. Usually they go away on their own. They can be a soft marker for Trisomy 21 and Trisomy 18.... but some research is starting to doubt that as they are also common in other healthy babies that have no other indicators for these conditions. Please try to relax. It will be fine ..... I am also going thtough the same thing as you at the moment.... your not alone :-)
  • With my first pregnancy my daughter had bilateral choroid plexus cysts and an echogenic foci in her heart. Needless to say, we were very concerned. However, 2 weeks later we had a follow up ultrasound with a Maternal Fetal Medicine Doctor and both had resolved. The MFM doctor told my husband and I that ultrasounds are so detailed today that they pick up everything! He said the cysts and foci are common and probably always have been but they didn't use to pick them up because ultrasounds were grainy and not as detailed years ago. I hope all goes well for you and your little one!
  • They are of no clinical significance when they aren't associated with other anomalies so don't worry!
  • hi. I had ultrasound last week and dr said there is a CPC in brain however all the organs are good, so better to take a chance or go for amniocentesis test. I m so worried about it. I m scared about that test :( plz pray 4 me mothers
  • hey darling. I am in 21 week and I had ultrasound on week 19, I have the same problem,CPC in brain, hope its nothing important, I read alot of scientific article about it and I asked many specialiasts, its 90% nothing but a part of brain development. I m waiting for the next ultrasound
  • @Shahrzadir @waggy90210 hey ladies just wanted to give you an update after hearing that our baby had two of these on her brain I went for an ultrasound with a specialist and the doctor said that she is literally 100% perfect the cysts will go away on their own and have no effects on her whatsoever no other type of tests needed... All praise be to God!! Please let me know how your follow up goes !!
  • I too just got results from my scan last week: 1 CPC, EIF, and placental lake.  I'm addicted to Dr. Google, and most everything I've read says that each is nothing to truly worry about, but it gets overwhelming when things start to stack up.

Remember, if it is advised to get an amnio (which often has a greater % of miscarriage than is your % of possibly having a chromosomally-abnormal baby), another option is to do a test like Verifi or Harmony where they draw YOUR blood and pull baby's DNA from that to look for abnormalities.  Zero risk to the fetus.

I already did the Verifi test at 10 weeks and it came back all clear, so I'm hoping my ultrasound this Friday at least shows that the cyst is smaller than on the last scan and maybe even that the EIF is diminished.

Don't forget to think happy thoughts and keep enjoying every moment and flutter and kick  :)

  • I also just recvd word from my 20 week us that our pumpkin has a CPC. Everything else looked perfect and my informaseq genetic testing was negative. I was reassured it was nothing to be worries about, but of course I am worried. I have an apt with mfm on Tuesday for a more detailed ultrasound, not BC my midwife thinks I need it but she wants me to have peace of mind. I'm doing my best to not worry and just enjoy Evey day of his ninja moves in my tummy! This thread is encouraging, thank you !
  • I also had the 19-week scan on Monday, and got a call from my OB that they found one CPC on our little guy, but all other measurements look good, so she assured me that she is not concerned about this moving forward.  I went ahead and had the free-cell DNA bloodwork done today, and the specialist recommended a follow-up ultrasound for next week.  Apparently, my little guy was in such a position at the first scan that they couldn't really get a good look at a few things, so they figured this would give me definitive results on everything.

I can't help but feel a little bit worried, but I know that the risks of T18 are still extremely low.  But I can't wait to get these additional tests behind me!
