Carb Loading

I'd like to believe that I've always been fantastic with my diet. & I always thought when the time came for pregnancy I would be even better! Nothing but lean protein, fruits, veggies, etc. However, that's not the case. Allllllllll I want is carbs! Muffins, pasta, pizza, soda... Help! Can't believe this has been consuming my diet the past few WEEKS! Not only that, but some of the most important weeks! i.e. I literally have to force myself to muscle through eating a healthy chicken breast that my husband cooked. And he looks at me like I'm depriving our child when I cannot finish it!

Re: Carb Loading

  • I've heard that if you're craving something its your bodies way of saying you're lacking that. Not sure if its true or not, just what I've heard! I say screw the diet and eat all the carbs! Give that baby a muffin! :)

You do need a lot of complex carbs! Have you checked out the mayo clinic guide to pregnancy? It has a lot of good suggestions for getting the good kind. I like 100% whole wheat pasta. Plop some chicken on that!

  • Pretty sure I've only eaten carbs for the past 6 weeks!! I figure once the 2nd Tri hits I won't be such a carb-a-holic!?!
  • Yep, that's also me!

It's been getting better though, I can actually eat vegetables now. Before they made me nauseous. So there is hope :)

Cottage cheese and whey protein have helped me a lot, both settle my stomach more than meat.

It is humbling, isn't it? I always thought I'd eat super healthy during pregnancy and only put on 15-20 pounds. I didn't know.....I didn't know......

Girls, I feel the same way. I am usually so healthy! Now it's pizza, pasta, and fries. I rarely ever eat fries! The last week or so eating salads has become somewhat easier. I'm hoping this carb craving is almost over.
  • All my baby wants is pasta. Like every day. Last night I ate 2 different kinds of pasta. I wouldn't worry about it! Throw some veggies in there with it and be happy when you can keep something down!
  • Exactly me also! I think carbs help us with the queasiness - it's SO hard to eat healthy, and like you I always have had a good diet. UGH!
  • All of my pregnancies my favorite foods were carbs and startches. Potatoes breads pasta etc. I tried but just couldn't switch to whole wheat/whole grain only but will do it sometimes. Im healthy inside and out - I also have a naturally fast metabolism so my body seeks what is going to give it the most at each eating, been that way my whole life. I do make sure I get a good amount of fruit in the a.m. and then eat a decent amount of high protein meat & veggies at dinner. Ive honestly never been strict or by the book with any diet. Just try try try to get the extra good stuff in there somewhere and Im sure you will be just fine.
  • I'm generally healthy myself.  Well balanced high protein diet as I'm a running/athlete.  However, this pregnancy, with the help of MS, I've only wanted bread, pasta, crackers, pretzels etc.  Hardly eaten any veggies.  I'm craving "bad" food that I don't normally eat, such as McDonald's Snack Wraps, Cuban sandwiches, etc.
  • I just ate a whole box of family sized velveta mac 'n' cheese, so...yeahhhhhh. That's where I'm at. hahaha
  • So glad I'm not the only one. I keep watching the videos about how important these weeks are, and then I think of my diet :((
  • Gaining weight but I don't think it's the baby bump! Lol
  • Pre baby I used to love spinach....I had some the other day and it was the grossest thing ever. I seriously hope 2nd tri is better because otherwise I'm going to gain 100 pounds with all the carbs I'm eating.

My midwife reminded me that first trimester is about surviving and eating what you can stomach - and the most important months nutritionally for baby are months 4-9. Try to cut yourself some slack and keep taking those prenatals!
  • I just adore potatoes in any form. Especially hashbrowns.
  • I may have thrown a small fit to my husband today when he denied me nachos for lunch. We compromised on moving taco/nacho night to tonight.
  • So glad I am not the only one. I knew I had a problem when all 5 of my meals in our weekly meal plan centered around pasta....and I crave Annie's white cheddar and shells for lunch. I'm convinced this baby is going to be a huge noodle when it comes out!!
  • I eat healthy and balanced .... and then at 4pm every freaking day the cravings for carbs hits hard. I have really tried to limit as much as I can, but you can only fight it so much. I have been keeping a weight gain tracker on my phone as well and tracking my excersise to keep myself in the healthy weight gain range for this pregnancy.
