Breast Pumps

I was just told today ( @ 8 months pregnant ) that it's ok for me to breast feed!! I'm so excited, but I have not done any research on them. If my insurance says they will pay for a breastpump - the hosptial will give me a Medela Symphony. Is that a good one ?

Thanks much -

Re: Breast Pumps

  • How come you thought you wouldn't be able to nurse? Not really any of my business so you can just not answer if you don't want to share. So happy for your good news regardless though!  There have been lots of posts about pumps over the last few months so you may have good luck searching through the old threads to get some thoughts.  Whenever these threads come up I try to encourage people to look into closed systems vs. open systems because of potential for mold.  I do think Medela is a pretty decent brand.  And just so you know, your insurance has to cover the cost of a breast pump.  It was part of the new health insurance reform that went into effect.  What I would suggest is calling your insurance company and seeing which companies you can order a pump from.  I would say the whole process was relatively painless for me.

  • That's awesome!! I've been told that most insurance companies will only cover the purchase of a personal grade electric breastpump or the rental of a hospital grade pump such as the Medela Symphony.  I got the Medela PNSA Starter for free which has an open system but I was told as long as you clean your pump regularly, mold shouldn't be an issue.  I got mine for free from Aeroflow Healthcare...they called my insurance company for me and verified my benefits.  It was pretty simple.  Here's the link to their online form if you want to check it out..https://www.breastpumps.aeroflowinc.com/qualify-through-insurance/.  Happy pumping! :)
