Hummus

Just a random question.
I have read and heard that hummus should be avoided during pregnancy due to listeria.

I have read that it is perfectly healthy, but have also read that it is to be avoided.

Anyone have any info on this?

Thanks, girls!

I thought it was fine, it was just the one brand sobra had a recall because of listeria. You can go online to see what the dates of the recall to make sure it is safe. But normally it's fine and healthy!

I was adviced by my dr to eat it because I was loosing weight and low on protein so I would tell you not to worry, she did warn me about apples so I'm guessing is not a mayor issue.

Please make your own there. was recently a major recall and many people got sick. It's easy to make on your own. I almost bought some then remembered the listeria danger and sure enough the very next week there was a recall due to listeria and this happened during this pregnancy. I would say it's always best to err on the side of caution. Some women will tell you they ate sushi, rare meat, soft cheeses, un heated lunch meats etc and were fine. I say why take that risk? It won't hurt to steam your lunch meat or make your own hummus until the baby arrives.

The caramel apples? I remember there was a recall on the caramel.

Actually, as far as I am aware, the hummus listeria outbreak was very minor, though I could be mistaken. Sabra voluntarily recalled the hummus after one random sample came back positive. I don't remember hearing about any other positive tests or anyone getting sick and it being linked back to the hummus, and I am a hummus aficionado so I was following that pretty closely. ;) The Blue Bell ice cream listeria outbreak was the major one that people were getting sick and dying from.

My OB also recommended that I eat hummus because I am a vegetarian and needed an additional source of protein. I do agree with PPs that it is better (and super easy!) to make your own, especially if you are concerned about listeria.

. ^ This. No one got sick from this one - a random sample tested positive, so the company voluntarily recalled a couple of their products. Most kinds were never recalled at all and we are way passed the expiration dates for the ones that were recalled. I eat some almost every day.

If you go to articles about it there are several posts from consumers who became ill from it. They may not have all reported it but I saw several comments on Facebook and news articles about it. Of course you may not be able to avoid all dangers or example "ice cream" that doesn't mean you should throw out all wisdom and medical advice and eat whatever you want. Listeria is nothing to play with and if a food item is a known risk to pregnant women and you are informed why be a rebel to prove a point? My child's well being isn't worth it. There are some unavoidable risks, but I will happily head the warning of my OB against known dangers. I wash my veggies and fruit with vinegar for example whatever I can prevent I will prevent. Sabra recalled 30,000 cases of hummus I'm not sure how many containers are included in each case but it really doesn't matter my point is this...why take unnecessary risks while pregnant?

Simmer down. I in no way suggested that she should take unnecessary risks, so not attempting to be a "rebel" by any means. Like I said, I did read articles about it and didn't see any that claimed illness or injury from the Sabra recall, and I shared that information with OP since it's relevant to her question.

People did get sick read the comments on the articles on Facebook and the news I read several comments of people who had vomiting and diarrhea. Doesn't matter one way or the other eat all the commercially processed hummus you want while you're pregnant if it's that important to you. There are plenty of foods I gave up and to me it's not a huge sacrifice if it means lowering the risks to my child. To each their own. Not every illness is properly reported to the FDA and if you do the research it is difficult for the FDA to force recalls on a lot of food products. For example the Foster Farms outbreak. I'm happy you eat it every day with no problems I won't be risking it, not a big deal and so much healthier to make from scratch.

I just bought some hummus yesterday. I live near a lot of Arabic stores and restaurants so its always made fresh. But if in doubt make it yourself or skip eating it. I recently read (don't remember where tho) that listeria concerns should not be taken lightly in the third tri because it can lead to still births.

Also the FDA website doesn't say that no one got sick it says that no illnesses were reported. Big difference. ;-)

There was also just a recall on president's choice brand Moroccan style hummus, for those of you who live in Canada. ( Real Canadian superstore ;) )

My Dr talked about imported green apples from the U.S. (I live in Mexico) having listeria and to avoid also yellow apples because they're usually grown together or close or something, but caramel apples are made with green apples most of the time, so I'm guessing that's why.

The president's choice hummus recall has been expanded fyi. It's all of their hummus products and one of their dips, I believe. Just google it and you'll find a link to the products being recalled.
  • Thank you for all your replies!
It is crazy, it seems like there is something wrong with every food out there. Lol :/ Haha

Whatever keeps our babies safe is worth it! :-)
